Updates on Middle and High School Boundary Concept Maps
After receiving the results of its most recent boundary survey, the Board received consensus to move forward one boundary concept for middle school and one boundary concept for high school for a vote and final approval at the February 12 Board meeting.
- Middle School Concept 2 Map moved forward
- High School Concept 2 Map moved forward
The Concept 2 maps are the only ones that will be voted on at the middle school and high school levels, respectively, at the February 12 meeting. The other concepts that have been previously discussed for middle schools and high schools are no longer being considered.
At this time, the Board has not made a decision as to which elementary concept map to move forward for a final vote. To date, three different elementary concept maps have been presented by our demographer, RSP & Associates. On Tuesday, the Board requested that RSP provide additional elementary boundary information for its consideration that would be discussed at the January 29 Business Services Committee meeting.
Boundary Presentations and Survey Results
Background
In late November, demographer RSP & Associates conducted two community engagement sessions during which boundary concepts 1 and concepts 2 were unveiled. These were introduced as draft concepts, with the idea that new concepts would be shared later based on survey feedback. RSP administered a survey from Nov. 28 - Dec. 10, and results were published in mid-December. At this time, the District began promoting that there would be a webinar on January 11 and that additional boundary concepts would be unveiled during that webinar. Given the additional concepts, a new survey was administered by District 303 to gauge feedback.
Jan. 11 - 15 Survey Summary
Participants had the option of answering questions about the elementary, middle and/or high school maps. Over 6,200 participants answered questions about the high school maps. More than 3,100 participants answered questions about elementary and middle school maps, respectively.
Concept preferences varied at the elementary level, while Concept 2 was generally preferred at the secondary level. For high school in particular, Concept 2 was highly preferred, and for middle school respondents Concept 2 was slightly preferred.
RSP Boundary Presentation
Following the District's survey summary presentation, Robert Schwarz with RSP shared additional information about boundary Concepts 1, 2 and 2A. This included rationale for how each map was drawn, neighborhoods impacted by changes, and enrollment projections at each school based on the changes outlined in the concepts.
After the presentation, the Board requested that RSP provide additional elementary boundary information for its consideration that would be discussed at the January 29 Business Services Committee meeting.
