Update on Standards-Based Grading from Teaching & Learning Dept.
Dear Duneland Elementary Parents,
Since the beginning of the new year we have been communicating our exploration of Standards-Based Grading. We have prioritized and focused our research because SBG is responsive to learning and aligns with our instructional priorities.
What might look the same vs different?
In a traditional grading system, student’s grades are typically based on a student’s averaged performance. This could also include factors such as effort and participation. As a student learns a new concept, those scores would be averaged into final grades whereby a student has progressed towards mastery. This ultimately creates a lower overall grade that does not accurately reflect the current or ending outcome. In turn this could also hide gaps in learning when grading larger projects. This system prioritizes the most recent and consistent performance by the students based on individual standards. Our goal is for all students to demonstrate mastery by the end of the school year.
Yours in education,
The Department of Teaching & Learning
ILEARN Testing Schedule
We are quickly approaching the opening of the ILEARN testing window. We ask that 3rd and 4th grade parents do their best to ensure students are present at school on testing days with a fully-charged iPad.
Schoolwide Story on the Announcements
This morning, we read Chez Bob by Bob Shea on the morning announcements. Mrs. Jimenez-Perez's students joined us as the live studio audience, and led the school in the singing of "Onward, Trojans!".
Congratulations to the Math Bowl Team
We would like to congratulate the Math Bowl team for their performance in their first ever Math Bowl. On Tuesday in Valparaiso, the team placed first in the yellow division. We are still waiting on statewide results.
The team is pictured above (L to R): Hannah Link, Porter Blythe, Michelle Holmgren, Elinor Chmielarz, Jackson Garza, Liam Mahoney, Scarlet Love, Audrey Lakia, and Coach Conway.
IDOE Bike Safety in K-2
The IDOE visited today to teach our K-2 students about bike safety. The students had a great time, and everyone left with a brand-new bike helmet. Thank you to Mrs. Bamber for organizing the event!
