Principal's Message
Dear Adelante Selby Spanish Immersion families,
I want to wish a very Happy Holidays and Happy New Year to all of our Adelante Selby students, families, staff, and community! The students and staff really got into the spirit and had fun last Friday for Holiday Sweater Spirit Day( see photos below). Parents please email Luminaria photos from December 21(Winter Solstice) for our next newsletter! Enjoy the fun Canva Holiday card from our Office Staff below.
I would like to congratulate all of the students for participating in this year's Student Council Elections. Youth Leadership opportunities are provided at our school through Student Council thanks to Jose Luna our Community School Coordinator. 4th and 5th grade students campaigned for Student Council by talking to fellow students, putting up posters, and recording speeches for the entire 3-5th grade student body. We are proud of everyone! The winners were: President: Cameron Hynecek; Vice President: Colorado Smith; Treasurer: Milo Douglas; and Secretary:.Annabelle Morrow.
I also wanted to share that 5th grader Abigail Forker participated in a county-wide art contest held by HIP Housing a few months ago, and was selected as one of 13 winners! The theme of the contest was to draw a home, and provide a quote about what home means to you. Each winner's drawing is featured on a month out of the calendar they produce, plus a cover image (Abby is December). Contest winners were honored at a party hosted by HIP Housing tonight. Abby was presented with her award, got to read her quote from the stage, and got to meet and chat with State Senator Josh Becker who was there to help honor the winners. It was a very cool event. Way to go Abby we are very proud of you!

"Annie Kids!" Musical Was A Success!
The "Annie Kids!" Musical was a wonderful event where our students had the opportunity to develop their talents after school leading up to the live performances on a stage in front of live audiences at MIT auditorium. Since September, the students worked hard learning their parts and rehearsing in preparation for the performances. Parents and community members were very much involved in supporting the effort with incredible set and costume designs which were remarkable! Parents also helped with make up, selling tickets, making the program, selling treats, and taking photos. We are also fortunate to have teachers who are willing to help like Maestro Dave with the sound crew (which included a number of Adelante alumni), Maestra Lili, and of course the Producers: Maestras Nell Douglas and Yesenia Bravo. We had Danny Giray, our Dance instructor, as the Choreographer and Vocal Music teacher Maestra Lidia as the Ensemble director. We also had Adelante Alum Anica Gaggar as the junior Assistant Director. Finally, the partnership with the San Carlos Children's Theater and Director Caitlin Berka has been very successful! Caitlin is very gifted in how she patiently works to bring out the best in our students. I want to thank everyone involved for supporting Annie Kids! and the students who participated--Bravo!! Finally, a very special THANK YOU to the MIT/North Star Staff and the Facilities Department for allowing us to use and have a safe and successful live and in person event at MIT Auditorium!

5th Grade Outdoor Education Trip January 22- 26th
The 5th grade students will be attending Outdoor Education at YMCA Camp Jones Gulch, near La Honda, during the week of January 22, 2024. Outdoor Education is one of the most memorable experiences of a child’s school years. The students experience the life science standards taught by attending classes, taking field trips, hiking and experiencing the natural environment, and they bond with classmates. Click on the links below to explore more.
December 20th Deadline: to PAY for the trip: $200 cash or check in the School Office. Please contact the Family Center or Maestra Lily if you need financial assistance.
New TK/Kindergarten Registration 2024/25 and Tours
The School District Enrollment and School of Choice for 2024/25 TK/Kindergarten opened on November 2nd and continues through Friday, January 19th at 3:00pm. It is important that both the Registration/Enrollment Form for your home school(based on your address) and the School of Choice Form for Adelante Selby Spanish Immersion must be completed by January 19th. Current PreSchool students here on our campus and siblings of students who are currently enrolled here and at Kennedy in the Spanish immersion strand have priority acceptance as long as the forms are completed on time by January 19th. Please complete this Adelante Selby Sibling 2024/25 Form so we can alert the District to prioritize your acceptance for next year.
Please help get the word out to family, friends, and neighbors about our weekly informational TK/Kindergarten Tours that meet in person at the school office every Thursday at 8:40AM and the tours will continue through the end of January. Please register for a TK/Kindergarten Tour with this form: TK/Kindergarten Tour Registration. Promoting our school by "word of mouth" from parents and community members is the best way to "market" our school and immersion program to prospective new parents. When promoting our school, keep in mind that mastering two or more languages has enormous benefits for our students, both native speakers of English and native speakers of the target language(Spanish) at a dual language immersion school. Other talking points when talking about our school are that research has confirmed the benefits of biliteracy and bilingualism that are demonstrated as brain and cognitive functioning, academic, economic, and social advantages, as well as cross-cultural competency and supporting a stronger family cohesion and connection to their family heritage.
Luminarias: An Adelante Selby Tradition
Luminarias are used throughout the world to light windows, sidewalks, and streets during the holiday season. As a bilingual and bicultural Spanish Immersion school, the families of Adelante Selby Spanish Immersion want to share this tradition with you. We invite you to participate in Luminaria Night on Thursday, December 21st, the Winter Solstice which is the shortest and darkest day of the year, by placing your luminarias for all to see, as well as going on a walk to see other luminarias in your neighborhood.
If you purchased a Luminaria your last chance to pick up your order is today, Monday, December 18 from 4:30-6:30 pm at Adelante Selby near the office. Remember to email Director Warren Luminaria photos from December 21st.

Child Nutrition Services: Breakfast and Lunch Menus
A healthy body fosters a healthy and focused mind. Well-rounded meals served in RCSD school cafeterias are created using USDA nutrition guidelines as well as “kid-approved” recipes. Whole grains, milk, fresh produce, protein, and healthy fats containing Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids are the stars of the breakfast and lunch menu items. Studies show that good eating habits and healthy behaviors are connected to academic achievement. Meals provided by Child Nutrition Services help to shape lifelong healthy habits. All students have the opportunity to eat breakfast and lunch for free again this year through our Child Nutrition Services.
COVID-19 POLICIES AND PROCEDURES:
Parents are to complete a self-reporting form when a student tests positive for COVID-19 (link below). Our office staff is happy to assist you in filling out the form if help is needed. Once you complete the reporting form, you will receive an automatic response with the isolation guidelines. We do ask that you continue calling the school office to report your child's absences.
