Principals' Greeting
Greetings Hiteon Families,
The past month has gone so quickly, and new routines and rhythms at Hiteon have begun to emerge. The new practice of having students enter the three different entry doors to begin class in a calm and relaxed manner has been amazing. Students are not all traveling at full speed to get to class with no time to breathe instead they have time to acclimate to school at a slower pace.
Teachers are diving into the curriculum, and students are engaged in the learning through asking questions and making connections. It is impressive how resilient our students and staff have been.
Thanks to our generous PTC, we have been able to bring the 5 Oaks Museum to Hiteon. Below are the details about the exhibit, This IS Kalapuyan Land. It will be outside located on the backside of the school near the primary wing. We invite you and your family to come and enjoy the Indigenous artwork. There are QR codes you can snap on to learn more about each art piece and the artist.
Museum Details:
When: November 3 through November 19
Where: In the grassy area at the back of the school near the primary wing
What: ABOUT THE EXHIBITION This IS Kalapuyan Land opened in 2019 as a physical museum exhibition by Guest Curator Steph Littlebird Fogel (Grand Ronde, Kalapuya) and became an online exhibition in 2020. Fogel annotated panels from the museum’s prior exhibit on Kalapuyan peoples, curated contemporary Native artwork into the exhibition, and added historical content from David G. Lewis, Ph.D., who is a preeminent scholar on Western Oregon tribes. The exhibition prompts critical thinking around the representation of Indigenous history and identity in non-Indigenous institutions.
Why: It is an excellent addition to our Tribal/Shared History curriculum (Senate Bill 13)
The ten art pieces represented have been turned into yard signs and have QR codes that provide more information. Please come and enjoy!
Kind Regards,
Meghan Warren, Principal
Jenny Read-Emslie, Assistant Principal

Notifying School of your Student's Attendance
Attendance habits are set the very first week of the school year, so please start building good attendance habits early. As a parent, you can help by establishing a regular bedtime and morning routine. You can also avoid medical appointments during school hours, as well as extended trips when school is in session.
If your student does need to be absent or leave school early, be sure to follow these guidelines:
- Email your teacher at least 24 hours prior if possible.
- Inform them that your student will be missing school or being picked up early.
- Please give detailed reasons for the absence.
- Teachers emails follow this format: first name_last name@beaverton.k12.or.us
- Include the office team on the email as well. This is incase the teacher is also absent the office staff will also be aware.
- Principal Secretary's email is martha_spinks@beaverton.k12.or.us
- Registrar's email is valerie_sinnott@beaverton.k12.or.us
- We ask that you also call the Attendance line. Again include details regarding the absence.

Hiteon's Gym Use
Greetings Hiteon Community,
The start of the school year has gone well. Regarding Covid-19, we have had some positive student cases at our school, but we have not seen spread throughout the school due to these positive cases. We continue to mitigate spread through social distancing, mask-wearing, and hand washing. We want to thank all of you for your ongoing proactivity and support.
We’ve been utilizing our Gym as a second Cafeteria but will soon be adjusting this to bring PE classes back into the Gym. This will be a win for our PE teachers and students! They will be able to space out in the Gym and become more active due to their ability to distance themselves from one another.
Our Cafeteria space will adjust and move from the Gym and Cafeteria to our former Music Room and Cafeteria. Seating has been 6 feet apart since the start of the year, with the coming adjustments, it will now be 5 feet apart during lunch. We will continue to have seating charts in place and coach students to put their masks back on as soon as they finish eating.
This change will go into effect on November 15. We will monitor this adjustment and readjust the plan as needed.
Please feel free to contact us with any questions (503)356-2140.
Best,
Meghan Warren, Principal
Jenny Read-Emslie, Assistant Principal

Native American/Alaska Native Heritage Month
In 1990, former President George H.W. Bush signed the proclamation declaring the month of November as Native American Heritage Month. The proclamation celebrates and recognizes the accomplishments of the peoples who were the original inhabitants of the United States of America. In September 2020, the Beaverton School Board adopted a resolution, acknowledging the month of November as Native American/Alaska Native Heritage Month.
Join us in celebrating the rich and diverse cultures, traditions, histories and contributions of Native people.

Thanksgiving Week Schedule Change
BSD has been impacted by a nationwide labor shortage. Currently, we’re down 250-300 substitute teachers and 400 classified substitutes, as well as many full-time positions. This shortage is putting a considerable strain on our entire system. Mechanics and dispatchers are driving buses on a daily basis; teachers are forgoing planning time to fill in for absent colleagues; principals are spending their days in classrooms as teachers. Our staff is overextended and in need of some relief.
For that reason, we’re altering the school schedule in late November:
- Monday, November 22: No school for students; professional development day for licensed staff; work day for classified staff (Previously, this day was an instructional day.)
- Tuesday, November 23: No school for students or staff (Previously, this day was an instructional day.)
- Wednesday, November 24-Friday, November 26: No school
- Monday, November 29: Regular school day for students and staff; A/Odd Day (Previously, this day was a no student/staff professional day.)
The result of the calendar change is one less instructional day in favor of a Wellness Day for our students and staff. While this change may pose a challenge for some, I hope that you will agree that a focus on wellness is needed at this time.
