February 2024
Dear Parents/Guardians,
January has been a busy month! The students did a great job on our FID day. I was able to visit several classrooms virtually and am so proud of their hard work and effort on Zoom.
We are now officially in the second semester of the 2023-2024 school year. There are quite a few things happening this month at Hoover. Take a look below and throughout the newsletter for more information.
- Students are currently being assessed on the middle of the year Acadience Reading and Math benchmark assessments. Teachers will be sharing these results with you once all testing is complete over the next several weeks.
- Leader in Me Family Night is tomorrow, February 1st from 6:00 - 7:30 PM. Join us for a night full of "synergizing" activities. See more details below.
- February 5- 9 Hoover has a "Super Bowl" toiletry drive. Click on the button below for more information on what is needed.
- Valentine's Day parties will be held on Wednesday, February 14. Your child's teacher will be sending information out with party details and volunteer needs. All volunteers must have clearances on file at the district office to help.
- In celebration of Black History Month and Women’s History Month, the District is sponsoring an essay and artwork contest. We invite students to respond to Dr. Martin Luther King’s famous speech, “I Have a Dream,” with an essay or artistic creation about how individuals can work to create a beloved community that pursues peace, justice, and mutual respect. All submissions are due on Friday, February 16. For more information, click the button below.
- Second grade students will be given the NNAT3 later this month. A letter will be coming home Friday with your child with more details.
Lastly, a note was sent home last week regarding drop-off and pick-up in the front of the building on 24th Street. We continue to have parents/guardians parking out front during arrival and dismissal times. The same goes for the midday kindergarten times as well. There are signs posted along 24th Street that state "no parking between the hours of 7:30 AM - 3:30 PM". Please adhere to these procedures so that we can ensure students are safe during these heavy traffic times. Thank you with your help!
What will the groundhog say this year? I'm hoping for an early Spring myself!

Leader in Me - Practicing the 7 Habits at Home
This month's habit is about listening to other people’s ideas and feelings. It’s trying to see things from their viewpoints. I listen to others without interrupting. It’s about being confident in voicing your ideas. It’s about looking people in the eyes when speaking. Habit #5 is seeking understanding through the skill of listening.
Habit #5 Means:
- I listen to others without interrupting.
- I raise my hand when I want to speak and I wait to be called on.
- I don't blurt out.
- I try to understand other people's views and feelings, even if they are different from my own.
This month, sit down with your family and use the questions on the worksheet below to brainstorm how you can apply Habit 5 in your family!
Take a Selfie and share the news!
Think of someone in your family who is a great listener. What makes them a great listener? Take a selfie with that family member and include a shout-out to them.

What’s happening in Guidance?
Student Leadership Roles: In January, 1st and 2nd graders learned about some new leadership opportunities at Hoover. After hearing the details of each role, and considering how their strengths may align with certain roles, students were able to complete an application to be chosen as a Class Ambassador, Recess Buddy, Cafeteria Table Manager, or Office Communications Director. Ask your student which role(s) he or she is interested in, and how they would show leadership if chosen for this job!
As we move into February, all K-2 students will be focusing on self-esteem during our upcoming Guidance lessons. Ask your student what they like most about themselves. As a family, consider sharing compliments with each other to boost self-esteem!
From the School Nurse
Dental Exam reminder:
The School Health Act of Pennsylvania mandates that all children in grades K/1 (original entry), 3 and 7 must have a dental examination. If you have not done so, please provide a copy of your child’s dental visit to your school nurse. Parents are encouraged to have the examination done by the private dentist familiar with your child.
If you do not have a private dentist the district will be providing school dental exams on Friday, March 15, 2024. Please contact your school nurse if you still have questions regarding dental exams. Please note that the school dental exam is a short screening exam only and not a dental cleaning or a substitute for regular dental care.
Physical Exam Reminder:
The School Health Act of Pennsylvania mandates that all children in grades K/1 (original entry), 6th and 11th grade must have a physical examination. If you have not done so, please provide a copy of your child’s physical and any updated immunizations to your school nurse. Parents are encouraged to have the examination done by the private physician familiar with your child.
If you do not have a private physician the district will be providing school physicals on Tuesday, March 19, 2024. Please contact your school nurse if you still have questions regarding physicals. Please note that the school physical examination is a short screening exam only and no immunizations will be given.
