Community Update
June 9, 2023
Hello North Rockland Families:
As we head into the last nine days of school, inch into the sprint to summer and begin the conclusion of the school year, the anticipation and excitement for what's ahead is buzzing across every one of our school campuses.
There are so many great things happening like kindergarten graduations, field days, trips, a historic final four game for our Girls Softball Team and the grand kickoff of our moving up ceremonies next week. When I see the smiling faces of children at these events, it’s clear, we have much to be thankful for in this District.
North Rockland is not only a special place to work, but to live, learn and lead. From our local businesses providing scholarships, to the trips to the Haverstraw Brick Museum or the North Rockland Youth Police Academy provided by our police, it’s evident that it’s the people here who make this community and school district the wonderful place we call home.
As we wrap up 2022-23 together, I want to thank you for entrusting us to care for and educate your children. Having involved, supportive parents, families and caregivers helping our students reach their maximum potential through committed school/home partnerships is something that we're deeply grateful for.
During these last moments I encourage you to share your thoughts, experiences and kind words with those teachers and staff who positively impacted your kid’s lives over the last 10 months. Members of our NR Family never forget and try to remain present during learners entire educational journey. Their influence does not stop once the bell rings or when the year ends. We're blessed with some truly extraordinary educators and employees in NRCSD and I know they always appreciate hearing your good feedback.
On that note, you will see highlighted below North Rockland recently recognized those educators who have worked tirelessly to earn tenure. The entire night was one of gratitude and pride. Congratulating teachers, administrators and staff on their milestone, surrounded by the best of the best, I could not be more proud to be the Superintendent of such a superb institution.
There are so many creative ideas and plans unfolding to reimagine how students experience their learning while continuing NR's tradition of visionary programming. The future is bright and we are looking forward to everything that’s to come in 2023-24. Our priorities will include increased unique student experiences, mental health supports, excellence and expansive opportunity for every learner, all while teaching our students to be responsible young people by empowering student voice.
One such expansion will be NRCSD’s Remote Academy which is now available online to other educational entities to enroll. The virtual program for eligible K-6 students is offered through NRCSD’s K-6 Curriculum and Information Systems divisions and features remote classrooms that include daily face-to-face instruction, while using the latest digital technology to provide a synchronous “in-class” online learning experience allowing students to learn from home.
While there is still much work to do from now until June 24, one thing is certain, we will finish the year the same way we started it - NR Strong and NR Together!
Get to know our Academies!
Academy of Health and Science
The NRHS Academy of Health and Sciences is a program of studies for students in grades 11-12 who wish to broaden their knowledge in the fields of Health and Science, investigate various health, science, and medical career paths, and explore the necessary skills needed in the Health Services industry. Students will see their high school education in Health and Sciences as a step toward long term college and career options.
The North Rockland High School Academy of Health and Sciences is looking for partnering companies and organizations to provide summer and after-school employment or internship opportunities for North Rockland students. The students have excellent academic and interpersonal skills that could benefit any employer. Have a student intern start that project you never have time to get to! EdCamp Rockland 2023!
EdCamp Rockland 2023 was “One-In A-Melon!”
The sixth annual “unconference” planted seeds of knowledge once again at Fieldstone Middle School. Educators from Rockland, the tri-state and beyond convened for 27 sessions across three “Trips” to the campuses eight tropical destinations. Each location covered a wide span of instruction techniques through sharing the expertise and experiences of attendees. By allowing presenters to collaboratively discuss their topics, there were so many fresh strategies to slice into. Aside from the learning, teachers, administrators, aides and students were able to connect and form relationships as well as equip one another with tools that they can nurture into the future. After all, the lesson of the day was - strong roots, bear the sweetest fruits! More pics.
Remote Academy
The North Rockland Central School District (NRCSD) Remote Academy is a virtual program for eligible K-6 students offered through NRCSD’s K-6 Curriculum and Information Systems divisions. This program was established in 2021 to meet the increasing demand for an online learning program.
NRCSD’s Remote Academy, now open to children from other districts, features remote classrooms that include daily face-to-face instruction, while using the latest digital technology to provide a synchronous “in-class” online learning experience allowing students to learn and "POWER UP" from home.

NRCSD's Got Talent!
Thiells Elementary School's 2023 Third Grade's Got Talent Show was quite the production, complete with costumes, theatrics and even stunts! Come with us behind the scenes for a glimpse on what went into making the stage come alive to wow the judges. With incredible talent, music, drama and a little help from the dedicated teachers of TES, we think this show might have just been the best one yet!
A round of applause is in order for North Rockland’s 2023 tenure recipients!
This week, NRCSD celebrated our educators who were recommended and approved for tenure. Feelings of gratitude and NR Pride were palpable during the ceremony, which was hosted by Superintendent Dr. Kris Felicello, Deputy Superintendent (and Tenure Recipient) Anthony Zollo, our Principals and the NR Board of Education.
We extend our congratulations to the 42 recipients that were granted the major milestone and thank them for always supporting the mission and vision of the district. Red Raider of the Week!
Devon Piccone is our #REDRAIDEROFTHEWEEK!
The stand out sophomore runner closes out the spotlight series on our athletes NR Strong!
Devon, while only in his second year on the track team, already has earned a section 1 title by winning the 3000 Steeplechase in last week's Section I meet at Arlington High School. His impressive 10:02.90 time quickly ranked him 4th in New York State. His endurance and focus has literally put him in the fast lane to success. As a team, North Rockland's Boys and Girls Track teams won Section I titles. Both Red Raider teams will be competing in five events at the NYSPHSAA Meet in Middletown this weekend. Head coach Orlando Rivera shared that Piccone has grown so much as an athlete and teammate this season and looks forward to seeing him build on his accomplishments. We know he's destined for great things, this is just the start. It is for all these reasons he is our Red Raider to watch this week! Let's make some #REDANDWHITE noise for Devon!
Lady Raider of the Week!
Ally Murphy is our #LADYRAIDEROFTHEWEEK!
The senior girls softball player is makes her mark as our final installment of the weekly highlight until the fall season.
Determined is a good word to describe Ally's approach on the field. In the section championship game against White Plains she was 1-4 scoring the first run of the game on a passed ball home with 2 outs. In the regional final game, she was 3-4 with a 2 RBI triple, 2 singles, a run scored and a stolen base. Combined she had 6 putouts and an assist defensively in those two games. Murphy has attained some big accolades as she was named NY State Top 100 Softball player by USA softball in July 2019 and 2021 Class AA all section & all league for North Rockland High School. She will continuing her academic and athletic career with Mercy College this fall. For all these reasons we are so proud to share that she is our pick as Lady Raider to watch! Let's make some #REDANDWHITE noise for Ally!
