Principal's Message
Dear Adelante Selby Spanish Immersion families,
Last week we started the Recology's Rethink Waste program in our school to educate our students on the importance of sorting the trash generated during snack and lunch time into 3 distinct bins: Compost; Recycling; and Landfill. Parents if you can please reinforce these trash sorting concepts/procedures at home it will make it easier for us here at school. Here is a Recycling Guide with photos to help teach the younger students. I am also happy to announce that this Thursday our students will now have the opportunity to get fresh, organic, Clover brand milk in lieu of the milk in cartons. This milk is ordered fresh and will be dispensed in cups from a machine. I've been informed that the milk tastes sweeter and is fresh and better quality.
Last Friday was a memorable day for our 5th graders as they received their Class of 2024 Sweatshirts. I really like seeing the tie dye colored shirts this year. I am always impressed by our students creativity with the nicknames they have on the back. Shout Out to Parent Michelle Smith and Maestra Lilly! (Enjoy a few photos below)
A good number of parents and staff were on hand to see our Transitional Kindergarten classes celebrating Chinese New Year with a little parade: "Gung Hei Fat Choy"!! At the end of the parade, the students "set off fireworks" by jumping on bubble plastic wrap that made the loud crackling sounds. Shout out to Maestras Aida and Jennifer! Maestra Cinthya's Second Grade class also marked the Year of the Dragon with some wonderful activities. (I have included a video and some photos below)
This Thursday, February 15th, we are are excited to reclassify 21 Adelante Selby English Learners at the Reclassification Ceremony at the new Hoover Gymnasium. Reclassification or Redesignation is the process whereby a student is reclassified from English learner (EL) status to Redisignated Fluent English Proficient (RFEP) status. This is a significant accomplishment as RFEP students are considered to be completely fluent (Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing) in English. Families of the new RFEP students have received an individual notification and invitation for the ceremony.
Finally, I want to call everyone's attention to the Lost and Found as a few parents brought up concerns at the last Unidos Cafecito. As most of you already know, the main Lost and Found is next to the office inside the black gate. Routinely, at the end of the last Lunch, we collect "lost" items and place them in the main Lost and Found. However, there is another Lost in Found that is primarily for the 200 REACH program students that is located inside the cafeteria. There may be times that students leave clothing out after lunch(PE/Garden/Dance) that gets placed in the REACH Lost and Found. Periodically, when there are too many items, we recycle the unlabeled Lost and Found into the green clothing recycling bin in the front parking lot. At the Cafecito, parents suggested that we put the unnamed items out on the blue picnic tables this Friday, February 16th in the AM to share with anyone that wants them and then we put the leftovers in the recycling bin. In this way we can reuse good clothing within our own community for families in need (and whomever wants). This means parents need to be sure to review the Lost and Found by this Thursday, February 15th at the latest. We can use a few volunteers to help this Thursday with this process. Also, I would like to Shout Out parent volunteers Keriana and Claudia for their help organizing the main Lost and Found.

The Spanish Book Fair Is This Week In The Library!
The Spanish Book Fair will be open after school from 2:00-5:00pm all week. It will also be open during the Glow Dance Friday night. The 3rd through 5th graders can visit the Fair on their own, but the younger students need to visit with an adult. All students will also have designated times they are going with their teachers with their class this week. Shout Out to Maestra Parenti for bringing the Spanish Book Fair to our school with actual books written by Spanish speaking authors!! Please try and buy a book in Spanish for your child and continue to encourage them to read in Spanish!
Children will need cash to purchase books during the school day (adults can pay with credit card.).
We can’t do this without volunteers, so if you are interested in volunteering, please sign up here.
Come get some new Spanish language books and encourage your kids to read! Also, if you see a book you think your classroom teacher would like, we also encourage gifting books to teachers as well
Thank you!

Child Nutrition Services: Breakfast and Lunch Menus
A healthy body fosters a healthy and focused mind. Well-rounded meals served in RCSD school cafeterias are created using USDA nutrition guidelines as well as “kid-approved” recipes. Whole grains, milk, fresh produce, protein, and healthy fats containing Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids are the stars of the breakfast and lunch menu items. Studies show that good eating habits and healthy behaviors are connected to academic achievement. Meals provided by Child Nutrition Services help to shape lifelong healthy habits. All students have the opportunity to eat breakfast and lunch for free again this year through our Child Nutrition Services.
