Hāwera Primary School
Newsletter No. 15 - 6th September 2019
From the Principal
Kia ora koutou
Happy Friday everyone! We've had a big week with several of our staff away with illness. The remaining staff have worked hard to keep these disruptions to a minimum. Unfortunately there is a serious shortage of relief teachers in our area and finding suitable cover can be a real challenge especially at this time of year. Thank you for your understanding and patience with this, we are looking forward to having everyone back next week. To help us out if your child is sick please keep them at home until they are fully well, do not send them to school as this can often add to the problem.
Last week I spent a couple of great days visiting schools in Nelson with principals from other South Taranaki schools. It was a wonderful experience, I appreciated the opportunity to learn from others, gather more ideas, problem-solve some of our challenges and affirm the great progress we've made with relationship-based learning professional development over the last few years. It reinforced the importance of establishing a family-like context and focusing on fostering positive relationships through high quality teaching strategies and interactions to improve the achievement of all learners.
Our community consultation about possible cohort entry for 5 year olds concluded this week. We appreciate the input of everyone who took the time to complete the survey, both sides raised some valid and interesting points. The BOT will now consider all the results, decide where to go from here and report back in the near future.
Please keep an eye out for our upcoming community survey that we are aiming to send out next week, we want to hear your valuable feedback to further inform our school's direction.
Today I had the pleasure of listening to the senior speech finals judged by Mrs Sullivan. It was great to see the wide mix of topics, great delivery and courage to stand in front of their peers. Congratulations to the winners, we wish you all the best as you go up against the other schools at the Lion's Speech Competition next week.
Our Cross-country/ Adventure Race is coming up soon. A notice will be sent home in the next couple of days. Please discuss with your child and decide whether they are going to do the optional competitive cross-county (in their age group as at 25/9/19) or the fun adventure race (in houses) or BOTH! Once you've decided please return the slip to the office as soon as possible so we can get the events organised.
Have a great weekend everyone! Wrap up warm and recharge those batteries ready for a great last few weeks of term.
