Principal's Message
Hello Lincoln Community,
Welcome to December! It's been great week after returning from the Thanksgiving Holiday! We hope this finds you well. Please look for information in this Newsletter on our Sock Drive, the Winterfest, State Testing, and our staff learning during the two professional development days last week.
Lost and Found: During the Posada - Winterfest on December 13, we will have the lost and found clothing items, etc., ready and organized for everyone to find what they may have lost. After Posada - Winterfest all lost and found items will be donated to a place where they can be available for those in need.
Reading - Foundational Skills Workshop for Parents of Kindergartners: On Wednesday, December 6, at 6:00 pm we will have a workshop for parents of kindergartners to learn more about supporting students with their reading development. Child care will be provided. Please come and join us if you're free that evening.
Family Survey: If you haven't had a chance to provide your input, please take a moment to complete this short anonymous survey on Culture and Safety here at Lincoln.
As always, please feel free to send your questions or feedback to us at teresa.alfaro@woodburnsd.org or pmcdougal@woodburnsd.org. Go Dolphins!

Learning Together, Better Together
On Monday and Tuesday of Thanksgiving week, all Woodburn School District staff gathered at the high school for two days of professional learning together! Hundreds of teachers, leaders, and staff came together to learn from and with each other as a school community. Several of our Lincoln staff presented to their colleagues and/or helped with the conference planning, including Maribel Ortiz, Lisa Wolf, Cadence Fee, Lorena Ochoa, Suzanne Loughridge, Chelsea Guzman, Virginia Perez, and Viviana Vera.
Dr. Johnny Lake
One of our keynote speakers at the conference was Dr. Johnny Lake, a dynamic speaker and nationally certified and internationally recognized educator. He led an inspirational presentation focused on race, culture, equity, inclusion, and cross-cultural interaction, reminding us all of the importance of ensuring that all children have a sense of belonging.
Rosa Floyd and baile folklórico
Another of our keynote speakers last week was Rosa Floyd, kindergarten teacher at Nellie Muir and the state of Oregon's 2023 Teacher of the Year! Rosa spoke to us all about her experience as an immigrant to the United States and how teaching and performing Mexican folk dancing with students over the years has been an important way to maintain ties to her family culture and history. She then led workshop sessions for a gymnasium full of Woodburn School District staff, who had the opportunity to learn and practice the art of baile folklórico together!

Arrival and Dismissal - Every Day
Please do your part to help us have a safe Arrival and Dismissal process each day. If you are dropping off or picking up your student(s), please prioritize Safety First, follow our designated traffic patterns, and avoid blocking traffic. For parent drop-off in the morning, please follow our staff traffic guides and pull forward to the farthest sandwich board so we can make the drop-off as efficient as possible for all. For the parent pick-up, likewise: Please follow our traffic pattern so we can maintain a safe and efficient pick-up procedure.
If you ever have a suggestion to share regarding safety or efficiency, we encourage you to contact our office and/or a Lincoln administrator. Thank you for helping our students, staff, and community stay safe as we begin and end each day!
FlashAlert - Communication for Inclement Weather
Now is a GREAT time to make sure you're signed up for FlashAlert, because FlashAlert is the primary way that we notify staff of emergency alerts like school closures or late starts (we do NOT use a phone tree for notifications any more!). You can sign up to receive Flash Alerts via email as well as via phone notification. If you'd like to learn more about how to sign up for Flash Alerts, you can watch this helpful tutorial, then click the button below to sign up.

Parent/Family Volunteers
Would you like to join the Lincoln Elementary community for field trips and other special occasions? We LOVE our parent and family volunteers! Whether you'd like to help out for special events like accompanying your child on field trips or volunteering on picture day, or whether you'd like to volunteer on a more regular, ongoing basis, we'd love to have you! Here's what you need to know.
There are three steps you'll need to take to become a volunteer:
- Read this Volunteer Handbook
- Watch this safety presentation
- Complete this Volunteer Packet, your application, the online volunteer training, and an online criminal history verification information form
You will need either a driver's license or other state-issued ID for safety reasons.
You can complete your training online, and turn in your completed volunteer packet to the Lincoln office at any time during regular office hours (school days, 7:20-3:30). NOTE: it can take a few weeks for your background check to be completed, so if you'd like to accompany your child on upcoming field trips you'll want to get this turned in RIGHT AWAY. If you have questions about volunteering, please contact Amaris Chavez at amaris.chavez@woodburnsd.org, or call the main office at (503) 981-2825.
Every Day Matters
Oregon State Assessments
Woodburn School District is committed to preparing every learner with academic knowledge and skills necessary for success beyond high school. Oregon’s statewide assessments in English Language Arts (ELA) and Mathematics are fully aligned to Oregon’s State Standards and provide students in grades 3-8 and 11, along with their families, one measure of academic achievement and growth. Assessment results identify your child’s strengths and areas for improvement in English Language Arts and Math. Each subject will be broken into categories and will show how well your child performed in each area. The assessments measure student learning on a scale that allows for comparisons across time.
While no single assessment can give a complete picture of your child’s progress, having your child take the statewide assessments provides educators, administrators, and parents with one source of information about what educational approaches are working and where additional resources may be needed. The data from state assessments helps inform district systems, supports and professional development for educators. Your child’s participation is important to ensure our schools receive the targeted resources they need to help all students succeed. Lincoln Elementary will share your child’s scores with you at the end of the current school year or the beginning of the next to help support your child’s success as they move from grade to grade.
