Dear Parents and Guardians,
I would like to give thanks for the many blessings that have been showered on this amazing community. Over 40 families and friends donated to SBS on North Texas Giving Day, providing funds that directly support campus initiatives. Bingo was also a huge success! This was evident in the smiles and laughter heard throughout the packed room all evening. The Parish Carnival was an incredibly successful event - beautiful weather, lively music, fun games, and delicious food combined to make a perfect day. A special thanks to Lino Gonzales, the Carnival Committee Chair, and the other dedicated volunteers for their time and endless energy. They worked many hours behind the scenes to make this day special for everyone in attendance. The annual School Mass completed the week and served as a spiritual and visual reminder of the work of Catholic schools in teaching and guiding each student toward God.
We are truly blessed.
Again, thank you to all the volunteers that work tirelessly to support our school and parish. May God bless you.

Tuesday Night Bites at Spring Creek Barbecue (Mesquite) - Tuesday, October 1st
Spring Creek Barbecue does ask for 2 volunteers to pass bread to guests in 30 minute shifts throughout the time period (a total of 16 volunteers). However, all volunteers will receive a free meal and a gift card, which is a pretty sweet deal. We will be posting a sign-up genius for volunteer slots, so be on the lookout and sign up quickly!

Acknowledging that all human wisdom and knowledge has God at its source, teachers in Catholic schools are tasked with putting faith into practice, both inside the classroom and within God’s entire classroom—their communities.
Jesus commissioned his disciples after his death and resurrection, “Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations…teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you” (Matthew 28:20). He linked teaching to service of all humanity, and as a result, ministry was born.
When Catholic school teachers are commissioned, they are publicly authorized and affirmed as ministers of the Church: forming God’s people in faith, promoting academic excellence, and guiding students along the path to heaven. Please join us in praying for all the teachers of St. Bernard’s School as they accept their role as witnesses to the Gospel inside and outside the classroom. Also, at the end of Mass we will be awarding the Christian Witness Award to one student in each class.
Below is the pledge that the teachers will give at the end of the homily:
~As Ministers in Catholic Schools, we will~
- Forgive others and each other—be reconciling
- Recognize the value that each person has—be thirsty for justice
- Accept human frailty—be respectful of the weak, and raise up the hesitant
- Open our eyes to the good in each student and family~ we are not blinded to love
- Pull the broken toward us—be agents of healing and compassion
- Not reject what we do not understand—we are open to the possibility of learning another’s ways
- Be servant leaders: charitable, responsive, involved, and committed to the greater good
- And always give primacy to peacemaking: loving others without resentment, and with a constructive spirit.
Carnival Raffle Ticket Update
The Carnival Ticket winner was announced at last week's H&S Potluck. There was also a prize for the class with the highest attendance at the Potluck Dinner, and the winning class was...Mrs. Appelman's 4th grade! THEY ARE KILLING IT THIS YEAR! They will be awarded with a pajama day. Date to be announced soon.
In addition, our 2nd grade student Elizabeth Neifert sold the 5th place winning ticket in the Raffle. Congratulations to all the winners!

¿Habla Español?
Spanish classes have been a lot of fun this year with our new Spanish teacher. Here is what Mrs. Baldock has to say about Spanish at St. Bernard's:
"During Spanish class, I have been interviewing my students and featuring each of them as “La persona especial del dia.” After each interview, we write a summary about the person in Spanish on a large piece of paper and then display it on one of the walls in my room. The other students in the class also copy the summary into their Interactive Notebooks.
This week the students learned about the significance of 16 de septiembre (Independence Day in Mexico). They learned that on September 16, 1810, Father Miguel Hidalgo rallied “the troops” against brutal Spanish rule and so began the Mexican Revolution which ultimately lasted for eleven years. Students learned how the holiday is celebrated in Mexico, beginning with the President ringing the bell, just as Father Hidalgo did over two hundred years ago. As a class, we wrote a brief summary about 16 de septiembre and again, the students copied it into their Interactive Notebooks in Spanish.
As the year progresses, students will learn more about the Spanish culture. We will learn using Comprehensible Input, which research shows to be the best approach to learning a second language. Please ask your children to share what they are learning with you and reiterate how valuable it is for them to be learning a second language! I realize that some of them have come to school with a strong grasp on Spanish already, but I hope that learning to read and write it will be something they learn to do well during my class. They are also leaders during class, as their non-Spanish speaking peers tend to rely on them heavily!"

FUN FACTS:
What would be your dream vacation, and with whom would you share it?
My dream vacation would be to go to any beach in the South Pacific or along the Amalfi Coast in Italy. I would go with Mrs. Senecal and her sister, Lynda. We would do nothing but lay on the beach for at least a week, eat delicious food, and laugh from sun-up until sundown!
Do you have an item on your bucket list you would like to share with us?
One thing on my bucket list is to walk the Camino de Santiago beginning in France and ending in Santiago de Compostela. I want to walk it with my sweet husband in the summertime when the weather is nice and warm.
What is your favorite movie, and why?
My favorite movie is My Big Fat Greek Wedding. I have a good friend who is Greek and the movie is truly the story of her life! Everything about it makes me laugh!
