Omaha North
October 2022
From the Principal
Greetings Viking Families,
Teachers and students are working hard for a strong finish to the 1st quarter (Oct. 7th). Parent Teacher Conferences are October 13th 12-7pm. See details below.
We are excited to welcome everyone to the first Academy/Title 1 Family Night focused on our Science and Research Academy on Wednesday, October 5th at 6:30pm. All are welcomed to attend!
This is also Homecoming Week where we show our school spirit, welcome home alumni, and celebrate what it means to Be a Viking! Our Homecoming Parade is Friday, October 7th at 1pm starting at Miller Park heading North ending at Clay Street. We look forward to seeing everyone there.
The game is Friday, October 7th at 7pm at Nile Kinnick Stadium (at Northwest High) where the Vikings will take on the Fremont Tigers. The Homecoming Dance is Saturday, October 8th in the MPC from 7-10pm. We are looking forward to a fun week.
We continue to provide a safe, positive, and rigorous environment where students can focus on learning. We review regularly what it means to Be a Viking: Responsible, Respectful and Accountable! We want students to enjoy extracurricular activities while keeping success in the classroom as priority #1. To that end, we will consider attendance and behavior when determining whether students can attend games, dances, concerts, or other activities. Student engagement in the classroom leads to greater involvement in and connection to our school community.
As always, thank you for your continued support of the Viking Community. If you have any questions, please contact us at 531-299-2700.
Go Vikings!

Operation Get to Class
Student success and safety are top priorities at North High. Therefore, our school is making a concerted effort to support every student in arriving to every class on time.
North High will run the following initiatives to support student punctuality:
- Students who arrive to every class on time during the weeks of October 3rd and October 10th will be entered in a drawing for Viking Bucks that can be redeemed for rewards, such as candy, snacks, drinks, and seasonal items. The Viking Buck Store is in the Viking Center. Hours of operation include A, B, and C lunches and after school from 3:05-3:15 PM.
- Administrators will randomly check at least one block each day for tardiness to class. Students who were marked tardy for that specific block will be assigned a Late School Detention. Students will serve the Late School on either Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday in the Viking Center. Students who qualify for OPS transportation can sign up to ride the late bus, and they will be dropped off at a common stop near their regular bus stop. Students who do not qualify for OPS bus transportation will have to arrange their own transportation home.
Student attendance will also impact a student’s ability to attend extracurricular events and activities. For students who come to school but do not attend classes, are frequently tardy, abuse passes or leave without permission could lose the ability to attend games, dances, concerts, school pep rallies, etc.
We want all students to enjoy their high school experience, which starts in the classroom. We appreciate everyone’s support of these initiatives.
Academy and Title I Night Sessions
We look forward to seeing you at parent-teacher conferences!
Safety is Our Top Priority
On Aug. 31, we shared a message with families regarding school safety, communicating during an emergency and what families can do to help support a safe learning environment. Below is a condensed message that can be included in school newsletters.
Safety is always our top priority. We are focused on providing safe, welcoming and supportive environments for our students and staff.
We are teaching all students behavior expectations from the classroom to the lunchroom and recess, or extra-curricular activities. Our Student Code of Conduct outlines expectations and discipline related to the safety and well-being of our students and staff. Consequences are designed to be a learning experience for students. Families play an essential role in promoting school safety. Regularly discuss behavior expectations and consequences with your student at home, and check in daily with your student to know what's going well and what may be a challenge.
If you or your student see concerning behavior, report it immediately to a trusted staff member at school or Safe2Help Nebraska. A Safe2HelpNebraska link is installed on all student iPads. Families can also call (531) 299-SAFE. We regularly practice our district’s Standard Response Protocol in case of emergency (fire, evacuation, severe weather and more).
Thank you for your partnership in promoting safe, welcoming and supportive schools.

North JROTC Cadets Practice for Second Annual Best Cadet Physical Challenge Competition
Cadets (L-R) Landon Arbuckle, Andre Toney, Alex James, and De'Ja'nae Sullivan practice carrying weighted equipment back and forth over a 20-meter course as many times as possible in ten minutes. The five-gallon water jugs weigh 40 pounds, and the steel can filled with sand weighs 30 pounds.
The equipment carry is one of seven events the cadets will compete in against eight other OPS schools. The Creighton University Senior ROTC Program is hosting the competition. The other competitions include a land navigation written test, high crawl over five meters as many times as possible in five minutes; a sled drag holding 45 pounds across a 20-meter course as many times as they can in 10 minutes; pushups in two minutes; a four-mile team rucksack-march, and a Conway Challenge. The Conway Challenge requires cadets memorize 15 items laid on a mat by color, shape, use, and position in two-minutes, then return to the mat after the four-mile rucksack march and place them back into their original positions.
Points are awarded as the team of five cadets perform each event successfully together. The cadets carry a 20-pound rucksack, and all members must finish the course within 15 seconds of each other.
All of the cadets volunteered to join the team in order to compete. They earn a black shoulder cord and Adventure Ribbon to wear on their uniforms.

Students also participate in field trips and attend workshops with health professionals to help build their understanding of a broad range of health careers.
