Letter from the Principal
Dear Corbett High School Families and Students,
In a concerted effort to ensure that all students have access to a high-quality educational experience, free from discrimination or harassment based on perceived race, color, religion, gender identity, sexual orientation, disability, or national origin, and without fear or hatred, racism or violence, Corbett High School administration has been working with students and teachers to improve the reporting process and develop an anti-discrimination curriculum plan.
I would like to invite you to a preview of the Every Student Belongs Action Plan that will be presented at the December 20th School Board Meeting. The preview will be on December 13th, 6:00 pm, in the High School Commons, and it will be an opportunity for questions.
Here is a brief overview of our presentation plan:
Overview of why this is happening now. (student story)
Reporting System as explained to students in homeroom Dec.11-12, including definitions and scenarios.
Consequences for discriminatory language and/or acts explained to students in grade-level assemblies on Dec. 13, 18, 19, 20.
School Culture Team creating a plan for homeroom lessons based on student needs in December and January
Homeroom lessons implemented in February.
Overview of K-12 staff professional development from 2020-2023.
K-12 Curriculum Project with ODE Ethnic Studies Standards - 2023-2025
The ability to be reflective about things we can improve in ourselves and in our community is one of the strengths that I admire and aspire to. Please join us in this effort to make every person in our school feel respected and cared for.
Sincerely,
Kathy Childress
Principal

Incident Reporting
On Monday and Tuesday in Homeroom, teachers will be sharing the new Incident Reporting Form with students. They will review definitions and look at possible scenarios that might be appropriate for using the form. Before rolling out the form, we collected feedback from students, teachers, counselors and administrators and revised the form to better reflect the needs of all users. Teachers will use these slides to prepare students to effectively use the form to report discriminatory language and acts. If you'd like to preview or use the form, it's available here.
Staff Spotlight
Zachary Young, ELA Teacher
Q: What's your favorite food?
A: Any form of fried potatoes! Fries, chips, tots, hash browns, you name it!
Q: What was your favorite subject in school?
A: It is a subject not often found in secondary school...but philosophy!
Q: Do you play any sports?
A: My main sports were soccer and track and field in high school. Though just track and field collegiately (Go Ducks!)
Q: When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?
A: I hoped to be a writer of fiction and join the ranks of the many fantastic writers who had inspired me (my list is too long to provide here but ask me and I'll be happy to discuss it ad nauseam!)
Q: What's the best place you've travelled to?
A: So tough to answer! There are many great places I have been lucky enough to travel to over the years. Though in this moment, I would say Laos or Peru. Both trips were full of good people, great food, and so many unforgettable memories.
