What We're Reading: VPL Staff Book Chats
I had convinced myself that I was not a fantasy reader, but this year I told myself I need to have an open mind and try new things. I have fully accepted this challenge and have read “Divine Rivals”, “Ruthless Vows”, and now “A Court of Thorns and Roses.” I needed to see what all the fuss and hype was about! Like Rebecca Ross, Sarah J. Mass did not disappoint. Feyre, a human, does everything she can to survive and put food on the table for her family. As she’s hunting, she spots a beast-like wolf in the woods and kills it before it can hunt her food. Little did she know, that by killing this wolf, her time with her family would end. She was taken captive by an immortal faerie, Tamlin, as payback for killing one of his own. Feyre contemplates how she can get back home, but is slowly growing feelings for Tamlin. Feyre learns about the faerie world and how evil it can be. Feyre does not want anything to happen to the faeries or the humans and she takes it upon herself to try to save both worlds. Will she be able to stop it.....or be killed for being human?
"A Court of Thorns and Roses" by Sarah J. Maas is book 1 in the series and out of 2,264,334 ratings, Goodreads gives it a 4.20 out of 5. If you aren't a fantasy reader, I challenge you to read this book or "Divine Rivals" by Rebecca Ross and see if it changes your mind. You can check both of these books out at the Vinton Public Library.

I learned something very interesting with the reading of this book: not only should you not judge a book by its cover, you should also not judge a book by its title!
From the time this book arrived in our collection, I was disinterested, thinking that it was a dull journal-type work "based on a true story." Turns out, it was told from the viewpoint of a 105 yr.-old man, who was the young boy that drove the giraffes to the San Diego Zoo, eighty seven years before. Needless to say, I was hooked from the first page, and couldn't put it down until I finished it!
Based on true events, this book includes actual newspaper headlines and articles, as well as telegrams that flew back and forth from those carrying the giraffes to the San Diego Zoo. Thank goodness for good friends, who recommend good books! Try this one!

Sometimes, going back into the past is a great way to find a new book. I've recently been reading books originally published in the 1950's and were considered "ahead of their time." This week's gem is a love story between two women available on the Libby app: "The Price of Salt" by Patricia Highsmith. Highsmith's writing style captured the main character, Therese Belivet, in such a manner that I completely understood her sense of displacement and awkwardness in the world. She was like a ghost going through the motions of living as a young, poor, creative soul until she fell in love with an older, more sophisticated, married mother of a small child named Carol. The two women find themselves on a road trip only to be hunted down by a private investigator intent on making Carol choose between her daughter or her lover. In the 1950's, a romance between two women could not have a happy ending and this book certainly attempted to shake the chains of convention. (4.02 Goodreads.com) Happy reading, friends! ~Heather Egan, Vinton Public Library Assistant
This weekend I started reading ‘Diva’ by Daisy Goodwin. This book is inspired by the true story of Maria Callas, the gifted soprano whose professional career in opera began in 1941 and spanned several decades. The story is full of drama, operatic detail and flawless descriptions of the talent, wardrobe and entourage that made Callas the diva of her time. I would recommend this story to anyone who enjoys historical fiction and am inspired to read other books by Goodwin.
Happy Reading!
~Kelly
