Message From Principal Engdall
Greetings Shaw Montessori,
Thank you for all of that great communication and feedback last week on how our students are doing with virtual learning. We will continue to make refinements based on the suggestions and student responses as we move along. It feels as if we have conquered many of the major hurdles with technology and the small glitches are being resolved as they present. We appreciate all of the work you are doing behind the scenes and screens to help our learners be successful. Our school passed out over 200 devices and so far, we have seen ALL of our enrolled children online with the exception of our youngest preschool learners—who are getting their work from the carefully planned Google Documents files that the teachers have filled with fun!
It was great to see so many families this week as you stopped by for the school supplies kits and materials from our teachers. So far, we have passed out 300 kits. We have a few left. If you were not able to stop by please contact Christina.Girard@phxschools.org and we can put one out in the pickup/distribution area for you.
Now onto testing! We will be administering the Galileo assessment for K-8 th graders the week of September 4th - 11th . Please be sure to take a close look at Ms. (Hawkin’s) Collier’s communication in this edition of See Shaw Shine. You and your student have a mandatory “testing assignment” to complete on Monday to prepare for test administration.
This is truly a very special community. The teachers have shared some of the incredible emails of thanks and gratitude that you send them. The absence of the children physically on our campus and in our classrooms has taken some transitional thinking. We are so thankful you are safe and look forward with great delight to the time we will hear the joyful noises of our children back at school.
All the best,
Principal Engdall

One of the many facets of bringing Montessori pedagogy and curriculum to the public school system is yearly mandated assessments. The assessment data helps us identify student needs, areas of strengths, and growth over the course of the year(s). This Fall we will be conducting our assessments in a virtual testing environment. We are in the process of receiving guidance and training from the district regarding how this will be executed online. We do know that the assessments will take place in a virtual testing room with your child’s teacher and/or another Shaw staff member that will serve as a proctor.
Starting this week, our Kindergarten to 3rd grade students will be taking a short Aimsweb Plus assessment. For kindergarten, we will assess letter names and letter sounds. For 1st to 3rd grade, we will assess reading fluency (the number of words a student reads per minute). Starting September 1st, our Kindergarten through 8th grade students will begin taking the Galileo assessment for both English Language Arts and Mathematics. On Monday, your child’s teacher will be posting a Student/Parent Remote Testing Agreement as an “assignment” in their Google Classroom that you and your child will need to complete by the end of the day.
If you have any questions regarding assessment, please contact Jennifer Collier (Hawkins) at jennifer.hawkins@phxschools.org

One of the most difficult things during this pandemic has been the physical distancing. I know that it is generally referred to as social distancing, but in reality, social connection is vitally important. Studies show that positive social interactions can elevate mood, reduce stress and improve one’s outlook on life.
I want to share a few tips on how to remain physically distant but socially connected.
1. Use this time to reconnect with family. Cook and eat a meal together, have a family game/movie night, work together on life lessons such as creating a grocery list, laundry and cleaning.
2. Stay connected with others. You can keep in touch with phone calls, texts or even old-fashioned snail mail. For video connections utilize Skype, Zoom, Facetime, google meets etc. You can even set up virtual playdates with your children’s friends and classmates.
3. Virtual/buddy exercise. You can attend an online exercise class or arrange a time to work out with a friend online. It will help keep you motivated and accountable.
4. Learn something new. Join an online book club. Learn a language. Go on virtual tours of museums or zoos. Attend a free online concert.
5. Perform acts of kindness. Become a pen pal for someone in a nursing home or assisted living. Donate to your local food bank. Be the one to organize a play date or online activity with others.
Remember, COVID will not last forever. Cherish your current supports and make an effort to build new ones.
Respectfully,
Laura

Attendance
Attendance is very important! It is directly related to the academic success of your child.
Attendance is being calculated differently than it is during in person instruction. On regular class days (Tuesday- Friday), your child will be seen on video by the teacher and counted as present for the day. On asynchronous learning Mondays your child can log in to work on IXL, upload work in Google Classrooms, post or send a message to the teacher- something to indicate that they were present for the day on Monday.
If your child is going to be tardy, absent, or leaving early, please communicate this via email with your child’s teacher. It is most important to let them know.
