As a reminder, we have no school this Friday, October 13th as it is a professional learning day for district staff. Please be sure to look at our upcoming events, as well as picture day details for this Thursday.
As always, please don’t hesitate to call the school office if you have any question or concerns. Have a great Wednesday!
Sincerely,
Jared Tiecke, Principal

Are you interested in volunteering and/or helping to organize events at Awbrey Park? If so, consider joining the Awbrey Park Parent-Teacher Organization (PTO)! Our PTO meets on the third Monday of each month from 6:30-7:30pm.
This month we will be meeting on Monday, October 16th at 6:30pm in Room 16. Parents/Guardians are welcome to enter through the purple hallway doors.
This month, Kari Skinner (4J Director of School Safety & Emergency Management) will be joining us to discuss school safety updates within the 4J school district.

PTO Family Dinner Night!
Next Wednesday, October 18th is our PTO Family Dinner Night Fundraiser at Coburg Road Papa’s Pizza!
You can support our PTO fundraiser with dine-in and take out orders. Just bring the Papa’s Pizza flyer with you when you order and the Awbrey Park PTO will receive 50% of the value of your food purchase! Families also have the option of purchasing Fundraiser Bucks that are good for all future purchases. These Fundraiser Bucks will earn 25% of their value for our PTO as well.
All students should have received a Papa’s Pizza flyer in Monday Mail this week. See the flyer below for more information!
Safety Reminder: School Crosswalk
As the nice weather continues in the early months of the school year, we will likely see an increase in foot and bike traffic at the crosswalk near Awbrey Park Elementary School. Please help us in exercising additional caution when entering and exiting the parking lot to help ensure the health and safety of all students traveling to and from school.
To help improve visibility and to ensure the safety of our students and staff, please avoid parking and/or idling in vehicles within 20 feet of the stop sign on Spring Meadow Avenue. The City of Eugene is aware of the concern and has painted arrows on the edge of the sidewalk to help assist families in these efforts. Thank you for your help!
Artist in Residence at Awbrey Park!
During the month of October, we will have the pleasure of working with Alseny and Andrea Yansane for our Artist in Residence program in grades K-5 on Tuesday’s and Friday’s at Awbrey Park.
Last spring Alseny and Andrea provided their West African Drumming and Dancing Assembly for our students. This year students will get to work directly with Alseny and Andrea to learn traditional Guinean drumming and dance. Each class will participate in two drumming sessions and two dancing sessions. I also want to extend a special thanks to ArtSpark Eugene for providing the grant which covers the cost of the entire residency.
Volunteering at Awbrey Park! (REPEAT)
We are excited to welcome volunteers back into our schools! If you are interested in volunteering at Awbrey Park Elementary School, please contact your child’s teacher for upcoming opportunities.
Volunteers will need to complete a volunteer application on the district website and be approved prior to volunteering. Please contact Jade Chrissis in the school office at 541-790-4050 for more information.

The EEF 5K and Fun Run is an opportunity for all schools and grade levels to run, skip, or roll alongside friends and family, fundraise for the future of education, and get to know the community organizations working to ensure 4J students are On Track for Success!
The Eugene Education Foundation’s Community-Wide 5K for 4J will be on Saturday, October 14th at Alton Baker Park. The Fun Run begins @ 10:00 AM. The 5K begins @ 10:30 AM. We invite you to register today! See our FAQs here for more information!

The Eugene Public Library is hosting a month-long series on the Science of Reading. This is a great opportunity for families to learn more about the research on ways to support developing readers, especially those with learning differences.
Families are welcome to attend one event or all four on Thursdays in October at 6 p.m. at the Downtown Library. In-room activities will be available for children. This series is presented in partnership by Eugene Public Library Foundation and Eugene Public Library.

4J K-5 Health curriculum - The Great Body Shop
Two years ago, our district's K-5 Health Adoption team selected The Great Body Shop as our new comprehensive Health Education curriculum for all 4J elementary schools. The Great Body Shop is a leading curriculum used across the United States and throughout Oregon's many school districts. This skills-based, standards-driven program is aligned with National and Oregon state standards for Health Education and offers excellent comprehensive Health Ed. instruction for our students to support their growing Health Literacy.
The program consists of 10 units that address the following Health topics: Injury Prevention & Personal Safety, Nutrition, Functions of the Body, Growth & Development/Cycle of Family Life, Disease & Illness Prevention, Substance Abuse Prevention, Community Health & Safety (w/violence prevention), Self-worth, Mental & Emotional Health, Environmental & Consumer Health, Physical Fitness.
Each month your child will receive a glossy, colorful magazine (at their grade level) aligned to the unit being taught called a "Student Issue". The back page of each Student Issue will include a Family Communication Letter to support Health learning at home. Teachers have access to their own Great Body Shop Teacher Portal and students will soon have access via Clever, which will enable them to also listen to the articles in their Student Issue in English, French, and Spanish. Once teachers receive their access to their GBS Teacher Portals, they will be able to connect you to the Family Portal.
As usual, parents are always welcome to come view any adopted curriculum at school. We think you'll be excited by this new, up-to-date, medically-accurate, engaging Health curriculum.
4J Annual Parent/Guardian Notifications & Permissions
Each school year, our district sends home annual parent/guardian notifications & permissions for the following topics and are updated in our student information systems:
- Walking Field Trips
- PG & PG-13 Movies (Grades 4-8 Only)
- Student Email & G-Suite for Education Notice
- Release of Directory Information
- Notice of Human Sexuality Instruction
These were included in Monday Mail earlier this month and can be accessed below. These permissions can be turned into classroom teachers and/or the front office when completed. Please feel free to reach out to your child’s classroom teacher or the office at 541-790-4050 if you have any questions.
2023-24 TAG Testing Notification
During the week of November 6, 2023, we will be doing our annual Fall TAG testing. If you feel that your child demonstrates advanced learning needs and should be evaluated for a TAG identification, please be sure to reach out to your child's classroom teacher. In Eugene 4J, we use multiple pieces of evidence to evaluate students for TAG identification, not just one single assessment score.
If you have any questions or concerns regarding TAG, feel free to reach out to our Student Success Coordinator, Kristen Gianforti (gianforti_k@4j.lane.edu) at 541-790-4050 or see our district website for more information.
