Why is Black History Month at the start of February and Asian American Pacific Islander Month at the start of May while Hispanic Heritage Month begins mid-September? The dates September 15 through October 15 represent Independence Day for many Latin American countries.
Hispanic | Latino | Latina | Latinx Heritage Month
Hispanic Heritage Month is also referred to as Latino/Latina/Latinx Heritage Month. The month recognizes the intersectionality of gender and ethnic identities of Latin Americans and Hispanic Americans - past and present - who have made significant strides for social, economic, and political growth in the U.S. under the theme "Latinos: Driving Prosperity, Power, and Progress in America."

- There are 63.7 million Hispanic people in the U.S. or 19.1% of the total population.
- 13 U.S. states have 1 million or more Hispanic residents - Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Texas and Washington.
👉🏾 In Minnesota, there are about 345, 640 Hispanic/Latinx people.
👉🏾 In Minnesota, about 1 in 16 people are Hispanic.
👉🏾 In Minnesota, Mexicans make up the 3rd largest ethnic group in the state.

In celebrating diversity, learn how the muxes, the Mexican Indigenous individuals from the Oaxaca region, identify as a third gender. Muxes are well respected in their community. They are considered separate from the LGBTQ community. In continuing to celebrate diversity, October also marks LGBT History Month with 31 days and 31 icons.
