Mental Wellness Week - Pancakes for EVERYONE!
Mental Wellness Week
The Douglas County Counseling Office organized it's inaugural school-wide Mental Wellness Week. During the week students completed Thank You notes to those adults who support them, teachers had breakfasts provided by community mental health partners, messages of inspiration were shared, book displays and drawing stations in the library, we PUMPED UP THE JAM between bells, and much more to support student and faculty mental wellness.

Spread the Word
Spread the Word was founded on an audacious belief, a simple observation, and an urgent goal.
- Our belief is that the world would be better if all people were valued, respected, embraced, included. Included in the games we play and the friends we make. Included in our schools, our workplaces, and our communities.
- Our observation is that despite the best efforts of many, groups around the world remain left out. One of these groups is people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, a group made of more than 200 million people, representing every country, belief system, sexual orientation, gender expression, race, and ethnicity.
- Our goal is to disrupt this cycle of isolation and exclusion with grassroots action for inclusion.

Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) - DC Experts
Douglas County High School believes academic, career, and social/emotional support and intervention is a collaboration between administrators, teachers, parents, counselors, support staff, school social workers, and school psychologists. We operate within a multi-tiered system of support. Universal supports are at the base of this model supporting all students. Occasionally, we find some students need more of the targeted and intensive supports that fall within our Response to Intervention (RtI) process within MTSS.
A student who may need additional support may benefit from RtI. Our hope is to integrate strategies to maximize student achievement and provide needed interventions in a timely and effective manner. Students are referred to RtI by a teacher, counselor, administrator, or a parent.
Anxiety - An Epidemic In the Current Teen Population
Anxiety 101:
Function of Anxiety: Protection Anxiety vs. Stress
How does anxiety work? Scans the environment for danger, and when it sees danger, it goes off to prepare you to get out of the situation (flight) or fight. Sometimes if you get too much anxious energy, you could freeze.
What is the paradox of anxiety? The more we do what it wants us to do, the stronger it becomes and the more anxiety we have.
What is the irony of anxiety? Anxiety thinks it is protecting us from our worst psychological fears, but really it’s the path to making our fears become a reality.
