Clayton Ridge Schools: October 2022
Where Excellence is the Tradition
Having health insurance is critical for our children to thrive at school. There are free and low-cost health coverage options available through Medicaid and Hawki which include coverage for medical, dental, immunizations, prescriptions, mental health services and more. You can have a regular doctor for your child and be protected from unexpected accidents and illness. Many working families qualify; children and teens in a family of 4 earning up to $80,030 may qualify for Hawki. And don’t forget, if your child is already enrolled in these programs, it’s important to renew their coverage every year so they can get the care they need when they need it. The Visiting Nurse Association (VNA) can assist with in-person application assistance for families with children through presumptive eligibility. You may contact your local Hawki Outreach Coordinator at 563-556-6200 or for more information go to https://dhs.iowa.gov/hawki or call 1-800-257-8563.

Helping Monarchs in Third Grade
Third grade students place milkweed seeds in mud balls. Students will take the mud balls home to plant in ditches and fields. Monarchs cannot survive without milkweed; their caterpillars only eat milkweed plants and monarch butterflies need milkweed to lay their eggs. With shifting land management practices, we have lost much milkweed from the landscape.
Monarchs in Fifth Grade
We were sent the eggs; they hatched into caterpillars. We fed them and made sure their habitat was fit. They ate a lot of milkweed! The tops of our cages began to fill with chrysalis’. During this stage, the hard work is done. The chrysalis’s began to turn a dark color. And one day a beautiful Monarch emerged. Its wings were crumpled up and wet.
As we watched, the wings fluttered, straightened out and dried. We provided a sponge and Gatorade for them to eat, and the students got to see a Monarch’s proboscis being used to suck up the sweet mixture.
Students did wonderful learning how to safely hold and tag a monarch. They did amazing! It is quite the metamorphosis. Simply amazing! We reared and released the most Monarch we ever have! Nicely done 5th graders! Your teachers are proud of you!!
Thanks again to Lynne Campbell for the opportunity and knowledge!

National Honor Society Induction
Mrs. Nicole DeGidio, NHS Advisor
On Thursday, September 29, 2022, the Clayton Ridge Chapter of National Honor Society inducted 11 new members. These inductees join the 7 current NHS members.
The objective of National Honor Society is to recognize students who have demonstrated achievement in the following four areas:
Character Scholarship Leadership Service
All juniors and seniors who have acquired a minimum 3.2 GPA will be invited to apply based on scholarship. Eligible students must indicate their desire to be considered by submitting materials demonstrating their accomplishments in the remaining three areas of character, leadership, and service.
Candidates will be considered based upon evidence of character, leadership, and service, in addition to the quality of their essays. Because all four areas are considered in the selection process, a top academic student may not be selected if any of the other areas are lacking.
While selection for membership in National Honor Society is a way for us to honor deserving students, it is also a responsibility. Upon induction into NHS, selected students will be expected to participate in chapter activities including meetings and service projects and to uphold the standards of character, scholarship, leadership, and service by which they were selected for induction.
