Lee Roy Myers Middle School
Volume 23 Issue IIII
WELCOME BACK GATORS!
Greetings Parents, Teachers, and Stakeholders,
Welcome to Myers Middle School, "Where Excellence is Expected Because We Put Students First"! It is with great excitement I welcome you to Myers Middle School. Like all years, we expect greatness from our students and parents this year. We also expect to provide excellent customer service from our educators and staff members. Thank you in advance to all stakeholders for your hard work and dedication I know you will give this school year.
We will always do what is best for our staff, students, and parents by putting students first. At Myers, we offer various clubs, organizations, and evening options for students to engage fully. We expect excellence from students and staff members. Your commitment to public education will help ensure Myer's students are successful. If there are ever any concerns or questions, please call me. I am here to support you and your child. If your child fails, then WE fail. Every child needs a village, and WE (parents, teachers, administrators, stakeholders) are a part of that village. This is one reason every staff member has a mentee, and every administrator has a mentor group.
I have been in education for over 22 years, 18 as an administrator. I know what it takes to be a successful student, parent, teacher, and leader. As a student, I understood the value of education. As a math teacher, I had some of the highest scores in the state. As a single parent, my child was able to graduate college debt free and is currently having a successful graduate year playing college basketball. As a leader, I was able to lead some of the best educators in the state of Georgia.
Our staff members are committed to students, and I am honored to help lead Myers to greatness. Building relationships are critical to a thriving culture of learning. Please try to attend multiple PTSA, School Council, Sporting, and Band events. We will also have community service opportunities, monthly college tours, and evening programs that can help strengthen your child's relationships with all stakeholders.
Again, I am proud to be a part of the best middle school in Savannah, GA.
Continue to do great things while inspiring others to do the same.
Educationally,
Dr. Marcus Scott, IV EdD

7TH GRADE: TEAM MOREHOUSE
The Social Studies teacher just completed units on JA Finance. Scholars were exposed to entrepreneurship, work readiness, and financial literacy through experiential, hands-on programs designed to help them understand the economics of life. The teacher has started a new unit on Southwest Asia with the scholars. This unit will acquaint the middle school scholars with the world in which they live. The geography domain includes both physical and human geography, the government/civics domain focuses on selected types of government found in the various areas to help students begin to understand the variety of governments in the world. The economics domain: however, the focus shifts from the United States to how other countries answer the basic questions of economics. The history domain focuses primarily on significant events in each region from the twentieth and twenty-first centuries.
Reading:
We will be reading the book "Real Kids Real Stories Real Change" We will also be working in I-Ready Reading to improve all students reading comprehension. During the upcoming months we will be covering more current events and spending more time watching PBS News. Also, using Spectrum Reading (7th Grade) has we focus on reading comprehension.
Mathematicians:
We are diving into Unit 2: Reasoning with Equations, Expressions and Inequalities.
Science:
The 7th grade scientist have completed Unit 1 where they made several discoveries that was a "wow" moment for many students. They learned about the characteristics of living things and the fundamentals of cells and their organelle contribution to the organisms. We are on to Unit 2 where scientists have been exploring and discovering the intricacies of how their bodies function through research using the traditional textbooks. The use of textbooks is providing students with reinforcement in reading and vocabulary building. Student got an opportunity to act as doctor and patient by checking for heart rate and breathing using a stethoscope. The teacher is seeking for medical professionals to visit the classroom to give lecture/hands-on experiences in learning about the various body systems. ELA: We looked at writing narratives using imagined or real experiences as well as narrative techniques. Students wrote short stories using even prompts and applying the elements of a story to their narrative creation.
Our student of the month is Tamia Allen. Tamia is the epitome of a model student. Her disposition, demeanor, discipline and devotion to her studies is unmatched.

8TH GRADE: TEAM SPELMAN
November in Georgia Studies is opening up with a focus on Government—the Judicial Branch, to be exact. How are judges chosen, what are the different kinds of courts, and what kind of case is seen in what kind of court? After the unit assessment, we will move back into history and focus on the issues ramping up to the Civil War and Georgia’s role over this span of time. This is a heavy set of standards that we will be discussing as long as possible to ensure understanding.
In Science this month, we'll be covering Balanced Equations, Unbalanced Equations and Newton's Laws of Motion.
In this upcoming month in Math, learning is focused on building from an understanding of proportional relationships to nonproportional linear relationships. As the focus shifts to nonproportional relationships, students begin relating these relationships to a definition of functions. The remainder of the unit focuses on identifying the pieces that make linear functions by comparing them to nonlinear functions, exploring characteristics, and interpreting those characteristics in context. Exploring linear functions in context will help students to understand how to model situations and explore real world phenomena.
The following strategies can be applied for students to explore and understand the concepts presented within the unit: • Ask students about specific points on the graph to help them determine appropriate domains and define slope. • Allow students plot points physically and using technology to understand the patterns of nonlinear functions and how they compare to the characteristics of linear functions. • Expose students to the purposes of Standard, Point-slope, and Slope-intercept forms through context.
Our student of the month is Jah'Yea Martin. He is not only a leader on the football field but he is also a leader in the classroom setting an example for his peers how to always strive to do the best one can and try to raise to the occasion.
8TH GRADE: TEAM CLARK ATLANTA
Here is a preview of what students are accomplishing in their 8th grade classes:
In Dr. Foster’s ELA class, students are happily participating in a school-wide book reading. The entire school is reading the text, Real Kids, Real Stories, Real Change by Garth Sundem. This book contains a series of real-life Narratives that describe the community activism of children, ages 12-14 years old. Myers’ students have been able to win prizes for their ability to answer questions about the stories. Students are also gaining practice with increasing their vocabulary knowledge through building a school-wide Word Wall based on new words they encounter in their readings.
Meanwhile, in Mrs.Hill’s physical science classes: -Progress Reports are issued bi-weekly, each student must sign and have a progress check -Common Formative Assessments are given every week in Progress Learning! -8th Grade Physical Science classes will continue their journey in Unit 2: Force and Motion with the Law of Inertia and analyzing Motion using data/graphs! -High School Physical Science class will continue their journey in Unit 2: Molecular Motion with Solutions and Solubility/ Acids and Bases!
Try Me! Science Riddle: I cannot stand on my two feet; I need help from one who can. But in motion, I am superior to the feet of man. What am I?
In Mr. Reynold's math classes students are completing Unit 2: Linear Equations and will be completing an End of Unit Test on Thursday and Friday, November 3rd, 2023. Students will be provided with a study guide on Tuesday. Students are encouraged to turn in all assignments that are outstanding. I will begin to make contact for students who are failing and may need to complete a Critical Decision Form. Please be reminded that I offer tutoring on request on Tuesdays and Thursdays @ 2:45 - 3:30.
In Mrs. Rivers GA Studies social studies class, students have been examining the roles and responsibilities of three branches of government in Ga’s state government. We have explored the way that bills become laws in the GA General Assembly, which is our legislative branch of government in GA. We also examined the GA state executive branch’s qualifications and responsibilities. Next week, we will wrap up our government and civics unit by examining the powers of the judicial branch in GA.
Students struggling with the concepts and low test averages should plan to stay for tutorials on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2:45-3:45 pm.
