EGMS Field Day
8th grade Celebration Evening
Attendance rates were a focus this year at EGMS and we reached our goal of 95% attendance on many days! We were excited about our 95% days but we were only able to make slight gains in our overall attendance rate from 90.2% last year to 90.4% this year. Even though this was a slight improvement, EGMS did have the highest attendance rate of all our middle and high schools. Another area that continues to be a challenge is our students who are considered “chronically absent” (attending 80-89.9%) and “severely chronically absent” (attending below 80%) as defined by the Oregon Department of Education. A continued goal will be to improve our overall school attendance this year along with reducing the number of students who have “chronically” & “severely chronic” absenteeism. At the time of this newsletter, EGMS had the lowest middle school or high school percentage of “chronically” & “severely chronic” absent students in the district. Although this information is something to celebrate there is also continued work to be done for next year! Our current “chronic” attendance rate is at 40.3% which we need to significantly improve in 2023-24. I want to thank all parents for assisting us in making school a priority and getting your students to school!
It was fantastic to witness some of the incredible academic, behavioral and social growth of our students over the course of the year. I appreciate all the families and community members who support our staff and Elton Gregory Middle School. Finally, I’d like to thank all our students for their hard work, perseverance, effort and commitment to learning at EGMS!
I want to wish everyone a safe and relaxing summer break!

Ways to Avoid the Summer Slide!
We are excited to announce a summer learning opportunity for all Redmond School District middle school students. Your child has been utilizing an online program called i-Ready Instruction throughout this school year. i-Ready Instruction provides students with reading and/or math lessons based on their individual skill level and needs, so your child can learn at a pace that is just right for them. This program will continue to be available over the summer months for continued learning! Availability will continue until August 22nd, 2023, when access will be temporarily shut down for school updating and maintenance. Students will then begin usage in the fall with their new classrooms.
Due to the nature of summer use, there will be no teacher monitoring of your child’s learning and progress within i-Ready Online Instruction throughout the summer months. Please be aware that students utilizing the program may reach a frustration level of independent learning. There are safeguards within the program to prevent continued frustration and lesson failure. If a student is at a frustration level and failing lessons, the lessons within the specific domain will lock and move the student to another learning domain. It is possible that a student will get locked out of ALL lessons and will remain unable to access instruction until the beginning of the new school year.
i-Ready Login at Home:
Please use the attached directions to access i-Ready Instruction at home with your child, if you have not previously done so.

Elton Gregory would like to spread awareness about vaping. While many students are not vaping, youth vaping is a concern in our community because of the health risks and impact on learning.
Why is vaping a concern?
The vaping liquids may contain nicotine, which is highly addictive and can harm parts of a youth's brain that controls attention, learning, mood and impulse control. These liquids can also contain flavorings, propylene glycol, and other harmful chemicals that are damaging to the lungs. More information can be found here:
https://tinyurl.com/Vaping-Quick-Facts
What can parents and guardians do about student's vaping?
Talking to them about vaping and substance use can protect them from starting and help them reduce or quit if they have already started.
Step 1 - Prepare for the talk (Know the facts, Be patient and Listen, Set a Positive Example)
Step 2 - Start the conversation (Find the Right Moment, Ask for Support)
Step 3 - Answer their questions
Step 4 - Keep the conversation going (Connect, Encourage, Repeat, Share Resources)
Families can help protect their child and use these steps:

KNOW THE FACTS
What does an e-cigarette look like?
E-cigarettes can have many different shapes, forms and names, but generally work in similar ways. They contain batteries and heat e-liquid to create an aerosol that the user inhales. When exhaled, the aerosol may appear as a cloud, or may be hard to see. Some are rechargeable, others are disposable. Vapes can look like cigarettes, cigars are pipes, and some are designed to look like everyday objects, such as a flash drive, smartwatch or asthma inhaler. Below you can see examples of (1) disposable e-cigarettes, (2) reusable "tanks" or "mods" (3) Suorin drops, (4), and JUULs.

HIGH SCHOOL SPORTING EVENTS
Parents and guardians of middle school students who wish to attend high school athletic contests:
Middle school students attending high school games must attend with an adult. Middle school students need to sit in the stands during games. High schools do not have the staffing to supervise middle school students. Just like all Bend/LaPine high schools, Redmond high schools believe that middle school students can successfully achieve this goal. However, in the event that middle school students cannot stay in the stands, they will be required to sit with the adult who brought them to the game or be required to leave. Please help your student enjoy the game by monitoring them while on high school property.
Thank you,
RHS & RVHS Staff
