End of Year Message from Our Superintendent
Dear GCPS Students, Family, and Staff,
As the school year ends, I want to express my sincere gratitude to our GCPS community. On behalf of the Board of Education, I thank you for your support, partnership, and contributions that have led to a successful 2022-23 instructional year.
In fact, we have much to celebrate as a school district for the 2022-23 school year. This past year, our Board of Education adopted our five-year strategic plan called "Our Blueprint for the Future" in July; our four-year graduation rate rose from 82.48% in 2021 to 83.15% in 2022; GCPS was ranked in the top 75 of Forbes' "Best Georgia Employers" list, and Moody's determined that GCPS' AAA Bond rating will continue to be supported by steady enrollment gains, strong revenue growth, and prudent financial management. 2023 GCPS Graduations— View the livestream!
If one of your favorite seniors is graduating from a GCPS school, but you don’t have a ticket, make plans to watch a livestream of the ceremony. Ceremonies scheduled for Gas South Arena can be viewed at the scheduled date and time online. For graduation ceremonies planned for the Convention Center Exhibit Halls, find event info and a livestream link on the Gas South website. A handful of other schools hold graduations in another location. Phoenix HS’ graduation ceremony will be streamed at 10:30 a.m. on May 23. A few schools planning on-campus ceremonies will livestream their events as well, including Brookwood HS, Central Gwinnett HS, Gwinnett Online Campus, Mill Creek HS, and Parkview HS. Find dates, times, and locations for graduation ceremonies online.
Summer is the best time to register any students who are new to Gwinnett County or changing schools due to a move. To learn more about what is required for new students, click here.
Register for Kindergarten by May 26 for a chance to win cool prizes!
Parents and guardians of children who will be five years old on or before September 1, 2023 can now register for the 2023-24 school year. All new kindergartners registered by May 26 will be entered into a drawing for cool learning prizes — tablets, games, puzzles, summer reading book bags, LEGO sets, school supplies, and more!
High School Registration for Summer Classes
GCPS will pay for up to two summer school classes for high school students needing to retake a class they previously failed. The district is offering this option to students at no cost to address COVID-related learning gaps and to provide students with an additional opportunity to earn credit for courses failed. Click here to learn more about these opportunities.
Students can stay sharp this summer with digital learning support
Digital summer support will be available to K–8 students from June 5 through July 7 on the Digital Summer Support eCLASS page. On the Student Portal, go to Additional Resources to find a link for Digital Summer Support. Once there, students will be able to launch their learning using one of these platforms: Amplify offers practice in reading or iReady supports mathematics. These digital tools are a great way to keep students connected and learning at their own pace during the summer!
Watch for the Virtual Back-to-School Backpack this summer!
Look for the 2023-24 Virtual Back-to-School Backpack in July, with information about registration, school nutrition, technology, health and wellness, and more!
The first day of school for all students, in all grades is Wednesday, August 2, 2023!
The community board governance feedback survey is still open!
As part of the Gwinnett County Board of Education's annual review process, the governance team is seeking feedback from students, families, staff, and the community. The survey is currently live and will close on May 24.
This summer, challenge your kids to use SEL everyday
By creating Social Emotional Learning (SEL) challenges, you can encourage your kids to participate. The idea is to accomplish these SEL challenges within a given time frame. For example, thepathway2success.com suggests you start with a kindness challenge where kids focus on completing a certain number of kind acts. Another favorite is a coping strategies challenge where learners test out 30 different coping skills.
Community Resources
Check out the Book Mobile this summer at a location near you
This summer’s Book Mobile routes begin on Tuesday, May 30, and end on Tuesday, July 18. Anyone who boards the Book Mobiles may check out books throughout the summer, and in the final week of the program, students get to choose a brand-new book to keep! In addition, the GCPS School Nutrition Program will provide lunch at the first four stops daily for both routes, and The Atlanta Community Food Bank will provide snacks daily at every stop for both routes.
Free Grab & Go Summer Meals from Gwinnett County Parks and Recreation
Between May 30–August 1, Gwinnett County Parks and Recreations offers nutritious meals through curbside pickup for families with children 18 & under or those 19 & older with a physical/mental impairment—while supplies last. The meals are available at these various locations Monday–Friday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
BOE Highlights: May 18 Board Meeting
On Thursday, May 18, the Gwinnett County Board of Education (BOE) held its monthly work session, the first Public Hearing for the FY2024 Budget, and board meeting.
In other news…The Gwinnett County Board of Education recognized Brookwood High School for placing 1st Overall at the State German Convention. Each year, the Georgia chapter of the American Association of Teachers of German hosts a weekend-long convention at Camp Jackson. Individual students and schools have the opportunity to compete in various cultural and linguistic events highlighting their abilities.
The BOE also recognized Brookwood High School students Evan Hitchcock, William Li, and Christopher Vickery for earning the Deutsches Sprachdiplom II German Language Diploma. This is an internationally recognized certificate that qualifies holders to apply for admission to universities in Germany. Only approximately 1,000 schools in the world are granted authority to offer this diploma, and exams are supervised by German Central Office for Schools Abroad.
Shay Kelly, a North Gwinnett Middle School student, was honored for earning Gold Level on the National Latin Exam (NLE). The NLE is a test given annually to Latin students across the United States and around the world. It provides students an opportunity to receive reinforcement and recognition for their accomplishments in the classroom. Depending upon their score, students may earn certificates, medals, and/or qualify for scholarships.
Dr. Jeremy Nix, GCPS Director of Social Studies, was recognized for earning the 2022 Outstanding Social Studies Leader Award. This award is given to a supervisor that demonstrates excellence in leadership and has a tremendous impact on the community they serve.
