Heads Up!
What we are seeing....
This could be in part due to the increase in opportunity to vape that summer break provides. When returning to school, some students may experience withdraw or cravings that lead to their vaping in school.
Our summer suggestions to help your student fight nicotine interest, behaviors, addictions, and cravings are:
1. Talk to your student(s) about the dangers of vaping.
- Ask if they have, and if so, why? What positive/benefit do they feel they get from it?
- What are other ways to achieve that positive/benefit?
- Ask if they know how the device works, the mechanics of it. Research it together. Make sure to emphasize the lack of regulations, exploding instances, and leaking pieces.
- Ask if they know what is in the liquid (if a liquid user), talk about the chemicals together.
- Ask how they would know if they are addicted. Does your student truly understand signs and feelings of addiction? The difference between addiction telling you that you want/need something vs. a non-addiction want to do something?
2. Have your student take the free online vaping education course in the Proactive section of this newsletter below.
3. At the next pediatrician visit, as your doctor about EVALI. Evali (e-cigarette, or vaping product use associated lung injury) is a serious medical condition that as of Feb'20 the CDC has recorded 2800 hospitalizations and 68 deaths because of.15% of these Evali patients were less than 18 years old. Symptoms:
- Shortness of breath
- Cough
- Chest pain
- Fever and chills
- Diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain
- Rapid heartbeat
- Rapid and shallow breathing
4. Look for vaping paraphernalia at home such as:
- Disposable vaping pens, ones that look like flash drives, larger mods that are more battery/charger shaped, etc.
- Receipts with the products on them
- Asking your student to be able to identify the people they interact with on Snapchat and Instagram (two social media apps often used by minors to purchase nicotine and drugs) from strangers
- Fruity smells, if there is a new fruity smell ask to see the spray/candle/etc. If there isn't one, it may be from the flavored vapes
5. Have your student establish a routine. Try setting a routine of 4 things you do every morning or night in the same order everyday. It creates a muscle memory routine to help keep you energized and prepared. It also will help fight cravings when they are not part of the routine.
6. Issues 1-4 of the SAC Corner for 2021-22 (see links below) have additional information and pictures on addiction, impact on the body, code emojis, slang, product names, and more.
The short of it is, "wax" is a slang term for cannabis oil. Commonly referred to also as weed wax, dabbing, dabs, butane hash oil (BHO), shatter, black glass, amber, nectar, or 710. This form is highly potent and can lead to loss of consciousness, hallucinations, and worse.
