November Character Theme~Gratitude
Potter Road's November character theme is gratitude. Gratitude is reflecting on the people, things, and places that we appreciate. Over the course of the month of November, our students will be engaged in social/emotional lessons that focus on this theme through read aloud's, interactive lessons, and videos.
Shining a Spotlight on Art.
Artistic Amazingness Happening at Potter Road!
The studio has been full of creativity and joy as we welcomed Ms. Jenkinson from the Massachusetts College of Art and Design! She has been working with students to develop observation skills and is now teaching our new Printmaking unit. Students will be exploring with different ways to be a printmaker in the art studio.
In our Upper Studio (grades 5-3), we spent the first part of the school year discussing concepts such as horizon line, foreground, middleground and background. We even touched on highlights, cast shadows and light sources! Wowza. Students experimented using their sketchbooks and paper to find what was the right fit for their art. Fifth graders had a special treat and used cardboard as a surface during their drawing unit.
In our Lower Studio (grades k-2), we discussed texture and how to use texture plates with first grade while in second grade we learned about the concept of symmetrical and asymmetrical. Rulers came out as well as we discussed different qualities of lines and how they can be horizontal, vertical..and EVEN DIAGONAL! Can you even believe it?!
In Kindergarten, we learned the different materials in the art room and how to be safe in our studio. We also read several books to anchor our work about shapes, Circle, Square and Triangle, all three books are by Mac Barnett. They were a fan favorite! We explored qualities of lines such as zig zag, dotted, straight, and wiggly lines.
