This week we presented our School Improvement Plan (SIP) and Annual Action Plan (AAP) to the Stanwood-Camano School Board. You can look at the slides we presented by clicking this link Stanwood MS Board Report

We are very excited to begin working with our staff to develop universal language about how to work with students to become "unstuck" in their work. Helping students recognize that it is okay to be stuck and a normal part of learning helps students move forward in their learning instead of giving up or feeling like they don't know anything.

There are many other parts to our School Improvement/Annual Action Plan that we are looking forward to sharing with you in the coming weeks.

Spartan Sports

This week our Girls Soccer team hits the road, traveling to Mount Vernon and North Whidbey. Our Cross Country team has its first and only home meet at Stanwood High School on Friday.

It is never too early to think about getting a physical for your 7th or 8th grade Spartan if they plan on trying out for basketball or volleyball. Basketball starts in mid-October and volleyball starts after Thanksgiving.

Clubs

This week two clubs are starting. Art Club (spots still available) begins Wednesday, September 28. It will meet twice a week on Mondays and Wednesdays from 2:15-3:15pm. Students should have a ride home. Contact Mr. Randall at wrandall@stanwood.wednet.edu with any questions about the Art Club.

Volleyball Club also starts this week on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2:30-4:30. Students need to return their permission slip in addition to having a ride home each time the club meets. Mr. Wall sent home information on Friday to all students about the Volleyball Club; there are still a few spots available if your Spartan is interested. Contact Mr. Wall at lwall@stanwood.wednet.edu with any questions about the Volleyball Club.

All students participating in clubs need to have an ASB card. Please contact our office if you have any questions about ASB cards.

Each week we would like to highlight different members of our Stanwood Middle School Spartan Staff. This week we will give you a two for one deal with our administrative staff, Tod Klundt and Holly Christmas.

With a combined six decades in education (shocking, as they are each still just in their 30's), Mr. Klundt is in his ninth year as the Stanwood Middle School Principal and Ms. Christmas is in her fourth as Assistant Principal.

Mr. Klundt tells everyone he has the best job in the district, and he is not wrong. With great kids and an amazing staff, our Spartan Pride is easy to spread far and wide.

Outside of school, Mr. Klundt enjoys golfing and Ms. Christmas spends far too much time following WSU football.

SMS and the Stanwood-Camano Food Bank understand this school year may be tough for families in our community, with the Universal School Lunch program ending and food costs skyrocketing. We want to encourage families to take advantage of the HOPE Backpack Meals Program to assist in feeding your child(ren) over the weekends throughout the school year.

A “backpack” is a grocery bag filled with non-perishable items and our cold packs include fresh fruit, cheese, and yogurt when available. Each student can receive 1 backpack and 1 cold pack to take home on Fridays. Students can also take extra backpacks/cold packs home for their siblings if so desired. For holiday breaks, students will be able to take 2 backpacks, and 1 cold pack.
Any child wanting a backpack/cold pack can receive one. There are no applications, documents, or income requirements needed for students to qualify.

School staff will distribute HOPE bags every Friday after school in the foyer outside the cafeteria. (This may change for holidays and/or conferences). Students can stop by and grab a bag before getting on their bus or heading to the parking lot for parent pick up.

2022-2023 School Year

Dear Families,

Our school district is fortunate to have access to Operation School Bell ®, a program offered by the Assistance Leagues of Everett ® for students who are in need of new clothes. To qualify for assistance, a child must be enrolled full time and qualify for the free or reduced lunch program. The process only takes a few minutes to get started and involves basic information.

In order to participate in this program, it is important that you complete the necessary forms for EACH child. Forms can be emailed to you or you/your student can pick them up from your child’s school.

There are options this year for how you would like to receive your clothing. You can choose to have a volunteer shop for you child and a bag of clothing will be delivered to your child’s school OR there will be a designated day (undetermined at this time) where your child, with your permission, will travel with district staff to the facility in Everett to shop for their own clothing items.

This program is for all SCSD students in preschool through 8th grade. High school students participate in a portion of Operation School Bell called “Teen Retail.” Please contact Azra Grudic, Student Support Advocate, if you have a HS student in need of clothing: agrudic@stanwood.wednet.edu

Please note that each child can only attend Operation School Bell ® ONCE each school year (through either the Stanwood-Camano School District or another program such as ECEAP).
