Looking back at the start of the academic year 2022/2023 brings the images of excited and yet anxious faces of students and teachers. Yes! AISB had just embarked on the journey of becoming an IB World School. We are currently in the candidacy stage of our journey to full authorization and just concluded a successful consultancy visit on April 24 - 25, 2023.
Our Elementary school is implementing the Primary Years Programme (IB) curriculum framework where learning is structured according to the six transdisciplinary themes which include;
Who we are
Where we are in place and time
How we express ourselves
How the world works
How we organize ourselves
Sharing the planet
It was amazing to see our students explore their learning under these themes, participating in inquiry activities and presenting their summative assessments. Each transdisciplinary theme lasted at least five weeks, during which students engaged in inquiry-based learning activities. These involved searching for information on what they are learning from sources within the school and at home, formative and summative assessments, and taking responsible action based on what they had learned.
Apart from our Pre- K 3 & 4 classes that explored five transdisciplinary themes, the remaining classes from Kindergarten to Grade 5, explored all six transdisciplinary themes.
PYP Exhibition June 16, 2023
Learners under the Primary Years Programme (PYP) are provided with many formal and informal opportunities to demonstrate how they have developed and applied their knowledge, conceptual understandings, skills and learner profile attributes through the inquiries they undertake. The PYP exhibition which is the culminating, collaborative experience in the final year of the PYP, is a remarkable example of these opportunities.
Our Grade 5 students have embarked on their exhibition in which they will demonstrate their understanding of Biodiversity and the causes of biodiversity loss.
They are currently investigating the causes of biodiversity loss with their peers' help and guidance from their teachers and the PYP Coordinator. Each student will narrow down to one cause of biodiversity loss and come out with possible ways to reduce or put an end to it. The students also went for a field trip to Lesio-Louna-Lefini Gorilla nature reserve to get more information, insight, and inspiration on biodiversity. Through the exhibition, students will demonstrate their ability to take responsibility for their learning and their capacity to take action as they actively engage in planning, presenting, and assessing their own learning.
The AISB PYP Exhibition 2023, will take place on Friday, June 16, 2023, from 13:30 to 14:50. Parents are invited to take part in the exhibition.
Should you have any questions about the exhibition or any PYP curriculum-related matter, do not hesitate to contact me.

MYP Corner
Dear AISB Community,
The school was just visited in person by Mr. Keith Browne, an MYP expert from the IB headquarters. The purpose of his visit was to inspect our overall progress in implementing the Middle Years Program during our candidacy. He met with administration, teachers from each department, parents and students. Additionally, he also toured the school facilities. His official visit report will be made available to the school in one month's time; which will give us feedback on three key areas: the Philosophy, Organization, and Curriculum of the school.
Preliminary feedback was quite positive in the following areas: he reported that students feel that their teachers are caring and engaged, that the school is doing very well in implementing IB philosophy, and that collaborative planning for teachers is happening and is explicit.
The next steps in the process are for the administration to receive the official report, to update our action plan, and to implement or improve any actions the IB identifies as "in progress" or as "matters to be addressed". I sincerely thank the entire AISB MYP community for their efforts so far and urge us to continue to be engaged and focused on improvement, we are halfway there!
Kind Regards,
Brandon Clemmons

Student Council and Grade 5 Community Service Project
The Student Council is planning to invite two orphanages on June 1st for a Get Together at school. They intend to play with and eat with them after school. Below are some of the things they would like to get for them to go back home with that day. The Student Council intends to extend this to the rest of the students and families so they can also get the chance to contribute.
