First Grade News
Apple Season
The first graders had so much fun celebrating apple season! We peeled apples and cooked them into warm applesauce. It smelled wonderful and tasted delicious! Yum! We also read an apple story and made an apple project too!
Safety and Security
Thank you everyone for following the procedures that we have in place for entering our building. If you need to carry birthday treats or see a teacher about something, please continue to go to the office and get a badge and go through our Raptor background check.
Also, we have already practiced a fire and tornado drill, but in October, we will also run through a lockdown procedure. It will be a level 1 lockdown, where staff lock the doors but can continue to teach. We have three levels of lockdown. Lockdowns will be discussed at age-appropriate levels in grades.
COUNSELOR’S CORNER
Hello Eastwood Elementary Families,
I recently taught an intro lesson on “The Zones of Regulation” to all the K-4th grade classrooms. The Zones framework is new/er for the younger grades and a review for students who have been attending Eastwood for at least a couple years. This framework is used to teach self-regulation that categorizes the many complex feelings that we experience.
The Zones lessons help students learn to recognize and communicate how they are feeling in a safe, non-judgmental way. It also teaches students some strategies and tools that allow them to move from one zone to another.
There are four zones based on states of alertness and emotions:
The Blue Zone - Low state of alertness, such as sad, tired, sick, or bored. Brain and/or body moving slowly.
The Green Zone - Regulated state. Might feel calm, happy, and focused. Shows control.
The Yellow Zone - Heightened state of alertness. Slight elevated emotions such as stress, excitement, silliness, nervousness, or confusion. Starting to lose some control.
The Red Zone - Extremely heightened state of alertness. Very intense feelings. Feelings like anger, terror, or panic, for example. Not being in control of your body.
After introducing the four zones, we spent time learning about The Blue Zone. I emphasized how ALL feelings are normal and okay. No feelings are “bad.” It’s what we do with these feelings - how we handle (manage) them - that is important. For our next lesson, we will continue learning about The Zones and understanding the many feelings that we experience.
I truly enjoyed my time with your children. I look forward to more lessons together throughout the school year. I also look forward to getting to know your children and watching them grow. Please reach out any time with questions or concerns. I’m happy to help! Thank you!
