Library Learning with Ms. MacCullough
It’s been a wonderful October in the library! All three grades enjoyed a variety of fairytales and folktales this month including Little Red and the Very Hungry Lion by Alex T. Smith (a classic fairytale with an African safari twist), The True Story of the Three Little Pigs by John Scieszka and The Paper Bag Princess by Robert Munsch. Kindergarten students have been busy exploring the library, learning the rules and routines and learning how to find “just right” books to bring home. In First and Second grade we are talking about the different types of books we have in the library, where they are located, and the differences between fiction and nonfiction in general. This week, First and Second grade became Inference Detectives and worked in groups to solve the Mystery of the Missing Halloween Candy and the Mystery of the Spooky Singer. Students listened to clues, studied the evidence, and made inferences.
Thank you everyone who participated in the October Pumpkin challenge (I’m still accepting pumpkins until Tuesday, October 31st so there’s still time to get in on the fun, if you’d like). The library is full of amazing pumpkin character creations and the students, teachers and staff alike are all enjoying your hard work.
I’m looking forward to an equally busy and exciting November in the library!
Spooktacular Halloween Stations
Our Hawthorne students are applying all they have been learning about rolling, tossing, motor skills and movement patterns to participate in our spooktacular Halloween stations. Ghost Booling, Witch Hat Toss, Pumpkin Stacking, and the Witch's Cauldron are just a few of the fun physical education stations. Their favorite by far is the Haunted Hayride where they drive their own tiny tractors.
Pumpkin Patch
A big thank you to our PTA volunteers for setting up our pumpkin patch! Our students spent the day pumpkin picking and decorating. It was magical to see our students reactions when they saw that our courtyard was transformed into a festive field.
Hawthorne Halloween Parade
Our Hawthorne Halloween parade will be held on Tuesday, October 31st at 9:00 a.m. Please have every adult who is attending wear an HES wristband. Parking will be available in the Holy Rosary lot. Please proceed through the back gates at Holy Rosary and HES to the playground field. We ask that you line up on the perimeter of the playground field. Please note, if we have inclement weather, this will be an indoor event for students only.
Kindergarten Family Social
On Saturday, November 4th at 10:00 a.m. our PTA will host some Hawthorne fun for our kindergarten families on our playground field. We will have face painting, temporary tattoos, refreshments, and of course our new awesome playground. We hope that you can join us for some family fun!
