GOODNOE GAZETTE
September 16, 2022
We completed our first week of school and students are busy at work and play! Routines and procedures are beginning to feel more familiar as grade levels start to delve into curriculum.
I will continue to be present at the bus loading areas during afternoon dismissal to assist with procedures and ridership expectations. Additionally, I started to ride a few busses home with students this week and will continue to do so over the next few weeks. Your help to reinforce appropriate bus behavior is much appreciated. These expectations are provided in our PBIS matrix included below in this newsletter.
I wish everyone a great weekend!
Beth
THIS WEEK IN PICTURES
SAFETY DRILL - SHELTER IN PLACE
Within the first 60 days of school, we must conduct emergency drills within our building. These drills help us to practice what we should do in the event of an emergency. Fire Drills are practiced monthly. During the 1st week of school, we conducted our first Fire Drill for the school year.
Next week (9/21) we will practice our Shelter-In- Place. This drill is designed to protect our children/staff from weather related emergencies. In late October, we will practice our A.L.I.C.E. Drills for an inside & outside threat. This drill is designed to protect our children/staff in the event an intruder enters the building (inside threat) or intruder on our school grounds (outside threat).
At times, we may have local law enforcement and district security personnel to assist with these drills. This added layer of expertise provides us with useful feedback to continuously improve on our safety/security efforts.
Teachers will continue to review these procedures with students throughout the school year.
If you should report to the school during these drills you will not be able to enter the building. A sign will be posted on the outside door to communicate this. Most drills are fairly brief. We thank you, in advance, for your patience and understanding during this time.

SCHOOL WIDE POSITIVE BEHAVIOR SUPPORT
During the past few weeks, your child’s class has been reviewing the SW-PBIS (School Wide- Positive Behavior Interventions & Support) school expectations. The lessons included a class discussion, modeling and practicing of respectful, responsible, and safe behaviors in the locations listed on the school-wide matrix. Your child’s class also learned about the voice levels that are expected for the different locations. Please take some time to review the matrix and voice level chart with your child. Our school website has a SW-PBIS link with more specific information regarding the structure of Goodnoe’s School Wide Positive Interventions & Support system. Check out more information at the links below.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION NEWS
We are excited about the new school year! Physical Education is where students learn to be active for a lifetime. In PE, students learn how to move their bodies fluently and develop the knowledge, fitness levels, physical skills , emotional and social skills necessary for a lifetime of health and physical activity. Your child will have PE once a week and it is important that your child is prepared for PE with appropriate clothes and shoes. Appropriate clothes and shoes give your child the opportunity to fully participate in PE activities safely. Students in grades 3-6 have begun their cooperative games unit while grades 1 and 2 have been working on locomotor skills. We are looking forward to a great school year with important events taking place such as the 6th grade track meet and field day!

COUNSELOR'S CORNER
Mindfulness nature walks are a wonderful way to spend time with your children, and autumn weather will make these walks even more enjoyable! While taking a walk with your children you can ask these questions:
What are things you see?
What are things you hear?
What do you smell?
What do you feel?
You can have your children pretend that they are on a safari, looking for animals that crawl, fly or walk, listening for sounds, and feeling the weather.
There are many nature scavenger hunts that can be found online, which can also make these mindfulness walks fun for children. Your children will notice different things each time you do this activity. Taking nature walks can also be a very calming activity. Enjoy the beautiful weather!

READING TIBITS & TIPS
We wanted to share that we are piloting 3 new ELA programs here at Goodnoe Elementary. Our Kindergarten and 1st grades are piloting Reading Horizons for the phonics component of ELA instruction. Second grade teachers and the 4th grade team are piloting My View and the 3rd grade team is piloting Wonders. As we look ahead to choosing a new, robust Language Arts program, using these materials with their students is the most effective way to evaluate the programs to determine whether they are a good fit and match to best meet the future needs of our students. Our goal is always to develop proficient readers and writers with strong critical thinking skills.
Please don’t hesitate to reach out with any questions that you may have.

LIBRARY NEWS
I am so excited to be back at Goodnoe as your children’s librarian again this year! It was so wonderful to see students excited about borrowing books from the library. Their book joy was contagious! Please remind your children to keep their books in a safe place at home and return them on their library day each week. A reminder on your phone works well for this.
Kids need lots of books! Please have a quick chat with your younger children about an appropriate amount of books you would like them to take out from the library (1-10). It may then be helpful to bring a tote bag on library day:) I look forward to an amazing library year with your children. Please don’t hesitate to reach out if you have any questions.
Sincerely,
Kris Topley

The STEAM Lab is up and running in F9!
Students in grades 1-6 have been enjoying introductory lessons and discussions about what the STEAM special is. They are learning that it is OK to try challenging things, to make mistakes, and to work together to solve problems. Mrs. Molishus and Mr. Schmoyer want students to ask lots of questions as they explore this new and exciting special.
