TIPS Journal May 31, 2023
as we wrap up the school year
Greetings from Tokyo International Progressive School
Please note tomorrow, June 2, TIPS will have an early dismissal at 3:25 p.m. Our busses will run on the Wednesday afternoon schedule.
Summer for many of us is a time to review and preview, especially the subjects which challenge us. The TIPS Summer Program is a three-week session (June 19 - July 7) with something for everyone. Registration is ongoing, and you may read more about the program and register at the link below.
I am happy to introduce Mr. Nikolai Jessen-Petersen as our Learning Support Coordinator for the upcoming 2023-2024 academic year. Mr. Jessen-Petersen has been a dedicated and well-liked teacher at TIPS since his first involvement in learning support at TIPS. Since January, 2018 he has served TIPS as a volunteer and a shadow; he became a classroom teacher here in 2019. You may know Mr. Jessen-Petersen from his frequent presentations about learning, executive functioning skills, and success at school. Many of our students know him as Mr. J-P, a soccer coach.
Mr. Jessen-Petersen holds a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology with a Minor in Philosophy. He holds two Master's degrees, one in International Education and one in Special Education, while being a licensed teacher in Special Education. He also holds an International Baccalaureate Educator Certificate and a Certificate in Teaching and Learning (MYP), in addition to the Special Education Network & Inclusion Association (SENIA) certification.
We warmly welcome Mr. Jessen-Petersen to the position of Learning Support Coordinator.
As summer arrives, I hope you and your families have a memorable and safe vacation. For those families who are moving to another city, thank you for having entrusted us with your sons and daughters. It can be tough to say good-bye to students we know so well.
Otherwise, we will see returning families in August for another enriching school year! My next newsletter to you will be in August.
As always, any questions, please ask.
All the best,
Lyn Sato
TIPS Principal

SUMMER SCHOOL 2023
STUDENT COUNCIL NEWS
Temperatures are rising and it’s becoming warmer by the day! To celebrate the start of summer and create an enjoyable day outside for students, Student Council hosted a Barbecue Event on Friday, the 26th of May. There were hotdogs, grilled-cheese, grilled apples, and s'mores for students to enjoy. With 50 happy, satisfied stomachs, we moved onto a whole school dodgeball tournament. Various teams competed with each other, and fought hard against the final boss, the Teacher Team. The dodgeball tournament was followed by a variety of out-door activities including volleyball, soccer, and basketball! Everybody had a great time!
This event was organized with the Futak-tamagawa park community who kindly lent us the opportunity and place to have this event. We hope to collaborate with them again in the future!

June 9 Online Presentation
Time management and organization are two executive functioning skills that are extremely important. Some students find these skills to be more challenging than others. There are practical strategies and systems to improve at the skills, however. This presentation will provide an overview of the commonly discussed and existing strategies, and share possible adaptable systems.
See you there!
