February Safe Routes Message
Walk and Bike: It’s Good for Your Heart! Whether you walk or bike a few blocks to school or close to a mile, your active commute is good for your heart, your whole body and it’s invigorating and fun! With colder winter weather, children spend less time playing outside, but a nice brisk walk or bike ride to school will help achieve their recommended 60 minutes of moderate exercise every day. This will help prevent childhood obesity and
support healthy bones. Walking and biking to school is also a great way for kids to get the physical activity needed for healthy minds. Kids who are more physically active have better academic performance. Studies are beginning to show that exposure to nature and free outdoor play can reduce stress and relieve ADHD symptoms. If that isn’t enough to get you out of your car, think about the air quality around a school when dozens of parents sit in idling cars while their children jump out. Air pollution has contributed to childhood asthma rates doubling between 1980 and the mid-1990s. Asthma rates remain at historically high levels and cause 14 million missed school days every year. Walking and biking to school is healthy for kids, healthy for communities, and healthy for the planet.
Love the Bus - Feb. 13-17
Join us as we celebrate the big yellow school bus during the week of February 13-17. We invite parents, students and staff to take a moment to thank the 270 bus drivers that safely transport 28,000 students to schools daily.
Elementary students are invited to create a card and show appreciation for their bus drivers during the week. On Wednesday, February 15, all elementary students who ride their school bus will also receive a prize! For more information and to download a card template, visit www.beaverton.k12.or.us/safe-routes
5th Grade Tumwater transistion
Dear Future Tumwater Families,
We are excited to welcome you and your children, our future 6th grade students, to Tumwater Middle School! We have planned several events for families and students to gain an understanding of the middle school program and build confidence about their new school. Please read more below about upcoming events that are designed to support a smooth transition to middle school.
Parent/Guardian Information Night - Wednesday, March 1st 6:30 - 8:00 pm
We invite parents and guardians of current 5th graders, living in the Tumwater attendance area, to attend our Tumwater Information Night on Wednesday, March 1st from 6:30 – 8:00pm. To accommodate our available space and your family schedule, please select a session that works best for you:
Session 1: 6:30 presentation followed by self-guided tour
Session 2: Self-guided tour followed by 7:15 presentation
This event will include a presentation about what to expect in 6th grade at Tumwater Middle School, including core academic classes, electives, and co-curricular activities. You will have the opportunity to ask questions, take a self-guided tour, and meet some staff members. Please keep in mind; this evening is designed for parents, not children. Our parking is limited so please consider carpooling, walking, or biking to this event.
5th Grade Fly-Ups - March 1st - 3rd
Tumwater will host 5th grade fly-ups during the school day on Wednesday, March 1st (Oaks Hills and Bonny Slope), Thursday, March 2nd (Terra Linda and private/home schools) and Friday, March 3rd (Cedar Mill & Findley) for incoming students. Students will attend this event with teachers and students from their elementary school. Bus transportation to and from Tumwater is provided. Students will learn all about Tumwater and what it has to offer as they tour the school with our 8th grade Web Leaders! Following their visit, parents/guardians will receive a ParentSquare message from Tumwater Middle School with a link to a course request form. We ask that parents support their children in filling out these forms online by Monday, March 6th.
We invite families to visit the Tumwater Middle School Website for more information about events at Tumwater Middle School. In addition, please follow us on social media - Instagram and Facebook.
We also encourage our families to follow our Tumwater PTO on Instagram and Facebook. You can learn more about the Parent Teacher Organization by visiting their website.

Public Safety Campaign
We are sharing an important safety reminder to please only use the designated crosswalks when walking to and from our Findley school campus. This applies to all times and especially to those picking up students in the walker zone to walk home at the end of the day.
The crosswalks at Findley are the only areas protected by a crossing guard and where cars would expect and be required to stop. Crossing Saltzman or Thompson roads at any other location is extremely dangerous as cars are not expecting or prepared to stop for pedestrians. Additionally, while we teach all students about the importance of being safe, crossing the road outside of designated crosswalks sets dangerous habits and examples that we don't want students to imitate. We understand it can be a longer walk to use the crosswalk but the safe examples and habits it sets for our students is worth it.
The safety of all of our students and families is of the utmost priority and crossing the road outside of the designated crosswalks without a crossing guard creates a highly dangerous situation. We ask that everyone coming and going from campus use only the crosswalks to do so.
