Joining the Military after high school
Explore
It can be a great honor to serve our country in one of the five branches of the military, and almost any career that is available in civilian life also is available in the military. It’s important to know about enlistment options part-time or full-time, financial support for college education and other factors to consider about this career option.
Visit these websites to learn more.
Plan
There are physical, academic and citizenship requirements specific to each branch of the military, and there are steps that you can take in high school to ensure you are meeting these requirements.
- **The ASVAB can be a challenging assessment/aptitude, and it is recommended to maintain strong academics and practice before taking the assessment.
- Students will have the opportunity to meet professionals from each military branch through the Career Center. Be sure to take advantage of these opportunities!
- The ASVAB is offered at each high school at least one time per year, so pay attention to these opportunities.
Join
Once you have determined a commitment to join the military, you will meet with a recruiter and follow the steps to enlistment, which are different for each branch and can include a direct entry, delayed entry or an officer training path through Reserve Officer Training Corps, or ROTC.
More info:
ROTC Programs : **ROTC is offered at more than 1,700 colleges across the United States. It prepares young adults to become officers in the U.S. military and provided paid college education in exchange for a commitment to serve in the military after college graduation.

⬇️ PAYING FOR COLLEGE ⬇️
Oregon Grants
The State of Oregon offers several grants for college that generally do NOT have to pay back. These funds come from the federal and/or state government. For many grants, eligibility is based on your own and/or your family's financial need, which is determined by submitting the FAFSA or ORSAA as soon as possible after the application opens each year. The 2024-25 FAFSA and ORSAA open in December 2023. Some grants consider additional factors. Most grants have their own application and deadlines.
Oregon Promise Grant - The Oregon Promise is a state grant that helps cover tuition costs at any Oregon community college for recent high school graduates and GED® test graduates.
Oregon Opportunity Grant - The Oregon Opportunity Grant (OOG) is Oregon's largest state-funded, need-based grant program for college students. The grant provides funding to more than 30,000 Oregon resident students each year.
Oregon Tribal Student Grant - The Oregon Tribal Student Grant provides funding for eligible Oregon tribal students to offset the cost of attendance at eligible Oregon colleges and universities.
Chafee Education Grant - The Chafee Education and Training Grant (also know as The Chafee Education and Training Voucher) provides funding to help current or former foster care youth with postsecondary education and training.
Deceased and Disabled Public Safety Officer Grant - The Deceased or Disabled Public Safety Officer (DDPSO) Grant supports dependents of public safety officers in the state of Oregon who were killed or disabled in the line of duty.
Oregon Barber and Hairdresser Grant - The Oregon Barber and Hairdressers (B&H) Grant Program provides one-time grants to low-income students who are attending a licensed school of barbering, hair design, cosmetology, or manicure in Oregon that participates in Federal Title IV student aid programs and in the B&H Grant Program.
Free Application for Federal Student Aid.
Before each year of college, apply for federal grants, work-study, and loans with the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA®) form. Your college uses your FAFSA data to determine your federal aid eligibility. Many states and colleges use FAFSA data to award their own aid.
** This year the FAFSA will be available sometime in December due to some changes they have made with the application process. Visit the link below for a better overview of the FAFSA.
