Board Votes on School Start and End Times Proposal
No Change in School Start Times
At the School Board Meeting on February 5, the Board voted 7-2 against the district moving forward with the implementation of later school start and end times, citing logistical challenges that could not be resolved to support a successful schedule change. Obstacles included, but were not limited to, scheduling difficulties for athletics, other after-school activities, and NMTCC students.
The vote followed several years of research, review, and discussion about possible options to shift start times later in order to provide additional sleep time for secondary students. A later school start time (e.g., 8:30 a.m. for secondary students) is associated with improved mental health, social emotional well-being, and academic success. Moving forward, the Board will continue to advocate for state legislation requiring all school districts to adopt a later start time (which would, if implemented by the state, eliminate many of the challenges identified if we were to change our times without other, nearby districts doing the same). To that end, in December, the School Board adopted Resolution W-14-23 supporting state legislation (House Bill 1848) that would require the instructional day for public secondary schools to begin no earlier than 8:15 a.m. beginning with the 2026-2027 school year.
Sleep Education Activities
Given the proven health benefits associated with good sleep hygiene, the School Board and administration will continue their efforts to promote and support sleep education, including our partnership with Geisinger's Wake Up and Learn. Throughout the school year, the district has been sharing sleep health resources via our social media in order to:
- help students understand the physical, mental, and academic benefits of healthy sleep.
- help students set and maintain good sleeping habits by providing educational information and strategies.
