Mrs. Dawn Riggie '71 Remembers Sr. Carol Schwartz
Sr. Carol Schwartz, a Sister of St. Mary of Namur MSM’s founding order, passed away on Monday of this week.
Anytime a Sister in our founding order passes away it is a loss to us all. These women are truly the mothers of Mount St. Mary Academy and to all of us alumnae. It was their blood, sweat, and tears that laid the foundation of our beloved school building and their dedication and prayers that raised the walls and laid the floors. They built us, they guided us, and they mentored us into independence. We live out their charism and embrace their mission.
It is especially sad for many of us in the MSM community to lose Sr. Carol, or as many of us remember her Sr. Mary Paul.
Sister Carol graduated from St. Mary Seminary (another all-girls high school the Sisters operated), Rosary Hill College, and Catholic University. Students and the classroom being central in her heart, she taught and was an administrator in various schools in Lockport, Kenmore, and Buffalo. She moved to Mount St. Mary Academy, worked on the administration team, and was serving as the principal when I was a student in the late 60’s / early 70’s. After serving as principal, she moved back to the classroom and taught History at the Mount.
As a student of hers, I can give firsthand testimony that she was an extraordinary principal. I swear she had ears that could hear us anywhere in the building, eyes that missed nothing, and a presence that commanded our respect. I also had the privilege of knowing her throughout my adult life and I found she had a wonderful sense of humor and a terrific smile, truly a remarkable woman.
I was lucky enough to visit Sr. Carol shortly before she passed away. I told her I was returning to the Mount to teach the Freshman Religion classes for the remainder of the year. In true Sr. Carol fashion, she looked at me, pointed her finger in my face, and told me “It was time to get to school and I had better do a good job.”
After she left teaching Sr. Carol had many ministries. She served in various roles within the community of Sisters, was the Parish Outreach Director at St. John’s in Kenmore, and volunteered in Fort Erie with the Sisters’ refugee work to name but a few. Sr. Carol was always seeing needs and working to meet them.
Sr. Carol, Sr. Mary Paul will be sadly missed.
