Help! I see an "I" for my grade!
BCHS Grading Scale Reminder
Student success and learning is why we are at BCHS. One challenge that has affected student success is the harsh consequence of the weight of a zero or low percentage F when it is on a 100 point scale. Students struggle to improve their grade and can be adversely impacted by the grade long after they have demonstrated learning at higher levels due to the traditional grading system. While BCHS is a Phase III school in the DVUSD grading and reporting initiative, we have identified a substantial benefit and immediate need to equalize the traditional 100 point A-F grading scale. In the 2022-2023 school year, BCHS will use a 51 point scale that equalizes each letter grade percentage value. Grades that would typically be entered as a zero indicating “no evidence” will now be entered as a 49%. This adjustment will provide students hope and opportunity to improve even when they have previously struggled with content or if they missed an assignment. This also allows BCHS to better align to all of our feeder schools that have been using the equalized grading scale for some time. While the perception of this change may be “getting a grade for doing little or nothing,” it is absolutely not that. The intention is to instead provide equity amongst the five levels of learning and to ultimately provide the opportunity for our students to improve and grow. Students that are not completing work or do not meet expected levels of learning will still fail; however, students that are relearning, taking advantage of Flex Time or other learning interventions, and are reassessing to demonstrate their learning, will have a greater chance of raising their grades.
BCHS is continuing to separate academic achievement and student behavior in our grades to ensure that grades represent student learning on state standards. The following is our procedure for both late work and reassessment:
It is critical that students learn and master essential skills and standards to ensure they are prepared for next level learning, new course content, and for college and career. Because we are committed to supporting student learning, BCHS will ensure the following for our late work and reassessment procedures:
- Students may submit late work for full credit within a specified unit or module. The specified unit/module will be defined by the Level Team and will be clearly communicated to students by the teacher. Teachers may use discretion on accepting late work beyond the unit of study to help with student intervention and learning on essential skills/standards.
- Students may reassess without penalty. Level Teams will determine processes for students to request reassessment which will include a plan to show learning prior to reassessment. This process will be communicated to students and parents by the teacher.
Show that Jaguar P.R.I.D.E!
BC Jaguar PRIDE means that our Jaguars are Prepared, Respectful, have Integrity, are Disciplined, and show that Everyone is united! To ensure a safe, focused, and positive learning environment, we PRIDE expectations with students on Thursday in second period.
- This includes our expectation that students keep their cellphones on silent mode in their backpack so students can properly engage in learning.
- Students should be prepared with a fully charged iPad each day and any other items required for class to help with their success.
- It is also critical that students are in class and on time to be present for learning which is critical for their success.
- We also expect our students to be respectful of classrooms, school and personal property each and every day.
Please review our BCHS PRIDE expectations in our Student/Parent Handbook on pages 48-50. Taking time to show Jaguar PRIDE is important as we work toward our mission of providing “a safe learning environment with rigorous academic opportunities for all students to graduate as productive, responsible, and contributing citizens!”
