School Attendance Policy & How to Report an Absence
Attendance Policy: Being present in school is essential for students to make academic progress. The objective of the district’s comprehensive attendance policy is to promote student attendance and identify the process used to address issues related to unexcused absences, incidents of tardiness, and early departures. The district utilizes a variety of strategies to encourage student attendance, including sharing information with students and families, family outreach, and imposing sanctions if needed. Communication about attendance expectations and addressing attendance issues is an important part of the policy.

In general, the following types of absences, incidents of tardiness, or early departures are considered excused:
Personal Illness
Sickness or death in family
Medical Appointments
Court Appearances
Religious Observance
Quarantine
Military Obligation
Pre-approved college visits for H.S. juniors and seniors
Any other absence excused at the discretion of the Building Administrator.

In general, the following types of absences, incidents of tardiness, or early departures are considered unexcused: Absence for any reason not included in the list above is an unexcused absence. Absences for reasons set forth above for which a student does not have pre-approval from the District or for which the student does not provide an appropriate note or documentation within three (3) school days of their return to school will also be recorded as an unexcused absence.
Parental requests excusing their child from school for reasons not included above (i.e., to get a haircut, to go shopping, to go on a family trip, or not stating a specific reason) are unexcused absences under state law. Excuses that a student "overslept" or had "car trouble" are also unacceptable and will constitute an unexcused absence or tardy.
The school will notify parents/guardians when unexcused attendance issues reach specific thresholds identified in the policy. This notification includes letters, phone calls, and potentially household visits, depending upon the extent of the attendance issues.
