Westbrook Families Weekly Updates

This week we are...

• sending good vibes to all of the AP Spanish students who are testing this Wednesday
• continuing to remind all students that the expectation is to be in full uniform, which means black bottoms and the school polo shirt; shoes should be closed toe shoes, no slides or slip on shoes are allowed, they present a safety hazard; We will also continue to host detention, deduct PBIS point and call home for any student who can not follow this expectation.
• Kick off May testing with Lexile and CAST testing
• taking the 9th and 10th graders to the Film Academy Museum and 11th graders to the Holocaust Museum on Wednesday, May 10th
• celebrating Teacher Appreciation week

This week is teacher appreciation week and I would like every student to reach put tp at least one teacher you appreciate. There are many ways to show appreciation, including making a homemade card. You can also make a poster, or simple let your teacher know. Whatever you choose, the most important thing is to make it personal and heartfelt. A small token of appreciation can go a long way in making a teacher feel valued and appreciated.

Good communication with your teen is one of the foundations of good parenting and something that every student needs, even when they don't seem to want to talk. It is particularly important in stressful situations, such as when your family is going through a tough time or when your student has had a falling out with friends. It is important that your teen knows that you care and are on their side, even if you don't always agree with them. You need to have the skill and the emotional resilience to go on offering help, even in the face of indifference and opposition.

Please note that you are not alone and if you feel that your student needs to talk to someone else - we do have 2 social emotional counselors available, all you have to do is reach out to either Mr. DePaz (alexyd@lapromisefund.org) or Ms. Cortez (nancyc@lapromisefund.org).

Conflict is the expression of differences between people. Disagreements are a fact of life, often uncomfortable for both teens and even adults. The world is full of people trying to deal with the by-products of unresolved conflicts and physical aggression is not an acceptable solution. In preparing students for the "real world", our focus at Westbrook High is not just on meeting the academic needs of our students but we aim to assist with their social emotional well-being too, which is why we are asking all families to talk to their student about how to appropriately resolve conflict and the resources available to assist them.

At Westbrook High we are lucky to have 2 full time social emotional counselors and 2 interns, please talk to your student about reaching out to either Mr. DePaz (alexyd@lapromisefund.org) or Ms. Cortez (nancyc@lapromisefund.org), if they need assistance in resolving a conflict or would like information on strategies that they can use to de-escalate situations or dealing with difficult people.

After being on a split campus for two years, we believe that it is in the school’s best interest to bring both campuses together to continue to further our school community. One campus will allow us to share resources. We have planned carefully, and can provide adequate classroom and yard space to allow for a safe and secure high school campus.

Thus, we are eager to announce that for that all grade levels, 9-12, will be housed on one campus at 4210 E. Gage Avenue in the City of Bell, CA, next school year. 😊

We will continue to provide bus transportation for students residing in the South Los Angeles region. We will share these details as soon as possible.

Please remember to remind your student to...

1. Use the restroom and drink water Before School, During Nutrition, Lunch or After School - in order to avoid loosing instructional time.
2. Make sure you are heading directly to class and avoid being tardy, loosing PBIS points and obtaining a phone call home

Please note, students NOT in uniform will not only be deducted PBIS points but will also be given detention for the day.

Food cannot be delivered to students during the school day by food delivery establishments, including but not limited to Uber Eats, Door Dash or GrubHub. Please remember that only parents and immediate family members in the computer system can deliver food to you during the school day. This is to better ensure the security of the school as well as to minimize disruptions to the school day. Food delivered to students by outside delivery companies will be confiscated and given to students at the end of the day, as they head home. If a student opens an outside door to allow an outside food delivery, or accepts food through the gate, they will face disciplinary consequences as that creates a security risk.

Help us spread the word: All future Westbrook 9th graders are invited to Summer Bridge at the Bell campus the week of July 17-July 21.

We would like to encourage any student who does not need credit recovery to take advantage of brushing up on their math skills to either get ahead or fill-in some of the gaps they may currently be struggling with.

The program is free, Westbrook High will provide transportation and ELAC (East Los Angeles College) will even provide lunch.
