MCH Student eNewsletter

Summer greetings, MCH students! We postponed our July newsletter so that we could wait and share some opportunities that we know you'll be interested in.

Included in this short newsletter is information about paid deployments, MCH Program orientation, updates about the new MCH Peer Program, MCH student group positions, and more.

The newsletter will resume in September 2020 and continue through the 2020-2021 academic year. If you have any events, accomplishments or resources that you’d like to see featured in next month's eNewsletter, please email us at mch@umn.edu.

We’re launching the MCH Peer Program this fall. For those of you who’ve signed up to participate in our inaugural year, thank you!

Participating 2nd+ year students: please hold September 3 from 2:30-3:15 pm CST | 3:30-4:15 EST | 12:30-1:15 pm PST for a virtual orientation to and kick-off for the Peer Program. You'll receive an email with more details later this week.

Matches will be introduced to one another the week of August 10. Stay tuned.

• 1:00-1:30 pm EpiCH Welcome & Info

• 1:30-2:30 pm MCH Program Orientation with Program Director Ellen Demerath

• 2:30-2:50 pm MCH Student Panel

• 2:30-2:50 pm MCH Peers Program Orientation (2nd+ years participating in MCH Peer Program)

• 2:50-3:15 pm MCH Peers Virtual Kick-off (all students participating in MCH Peer Program)

• 3:15 pm Adjourn!

If you’re interested in taking on a leadership position as an MCH Student Interest Group (MCHIG) executive committee member, please view position details and complete this form to submit your application for this leadership position. We need incoming and current students to take on these roles.

There are four spots available. Executive committee members will be paid a small stipend at the end of the semester for their time. For questions, email Alyse Haven at mch@umn.edu.

Center staff and faculty frequently respond to requests, and seek out opportunities, for MCH students to be deployed to a state agency or nonprofit. The student works directly with a masters-level professional to assist the organization or agency with a time-limited project. The student receives a stipend from the Center, which is paid directly to the student via a one-time stipend at the end of their deployment.

All Fall 2020 deployments will be virtual due to COVID.

MPHA has openings for two Student Representatives to serve on its Governing Council. The MPHA Student Representative position is an unpaid board position for approximately one year. It’s an excellent leadership and networking opportunity for a graduate or undergraduate public health student!

Applications are due to admin@mpha.net by August 12. MPHA’s Executive Committee will review candidates on August 13, notify the people selected, and hope they can start at the next Governing Council meeting on September 10.

The aims of the Center include providing continuing professional education in maternal and child health (MCH) and support for students in online and in-person MCH graduate programs at the University of Minnesota. Center and MCH Program faculty are involved in research and training in infant and child health, adolescent health, family health, health disparities, reproductive health, and women's health.
