January Newsletter
January 1, 2023
Happy 2023 Rider Families! We hope you and your family had a relaxing holiday season.
As the 2022-2023 school year moves forward, we have a number of upcoming activities. The first semester will end on Friday, January 13. Students will be taking their semester exams and finishing projects/assignments Thursday and Friday, January 12 & 13. Later in the third quarter our freshmen, sophomore and junior students will be participating in the PreACT, NDSA Science and ACT assessments. Testing will occur between the dates of Mar. 2 – Apr. 2. You will also be receiving additional information as we move closer to the testing window.
We are beginning to plan for the 2023-24 school year. Freshman, sophomores, and juniors will be registering for next year’s classes in January and February. Registration for classes will be done online. An email with a guide sheet on the registration process will be emailed to all families. We do have our course description book online at our school website: https://www.gfschools.org/redriver under the students tab to assist in the selection of classes.
In January and February sophomores are scheduled for individual conferences with their counselor and parents/guardians. A letter with the date and time of these conferences was mailed in December. Sophomores should complete their online registration before this meeting. Our counseling department will also be doing classroom presentations for our freshman and juniors related to schedules and course offerings. Students will then have an individual conference with their counselor.
Finally, please make note of the following upcoming dates:
Tuesday, January 3 – School Resumes
Friday, January 13 – end of 1st semester
Semester testing will occur on Thursday and Friday, January 12 & 13.
No School: Monday, January 16 – Martin Luther King Jr. Day & Teacher Professional Development
Thank you for your continued support of Red River High School.
Sincerely,
Dr. Darin J. Walters

GAPP
The German American Partnership Program is back! After a two-year hiatus, our German exchange partners will be traveling back to Grand Forks from the Lise-Meitner-Gymnasium in Remseck am Neckar, Germany. We will be welcoming 21 students and 2 teachers in February for their 3-week stay. Students currently in German are welcome to sign up to host a student and are able to host any year during high school. We will be traveling to Germany in June/July 2023 to stay with our same exchange partners. Students in German are able to travel after their 10th or 11th-grade year. Applications will be available in late fall. There will be upcoming informational meetings about hosting and traveling. For more information now, please visit www.grandforksgapp.org. Information and meeting dates will be shared in class. Parents are also welcome to email Frau Feole for more information.

Parents Lead
Setting a Pattern of Rules and Consequences
Kids are less likely to use alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs if their parents have established a pattern of setting clear rules and consequences for breaking those rules. This applies to no-use
rules about tobacco, alcohol, and other drugs — as well as bedtimes and homework. Have clear expectations for behavior, monitor your child, and implement appropriate consequences. In setting these rules, be sure you discuss your rules and expectations in advance and follow through with the consequences you’ve set.
Don’t forget to acknowledge times when your child follows the rules! Parents who have a warm relationship with their children while maintaining rules for behavior are teaching their children self-discipline. Parents who have rules that are too harsh or no rules at all are more likely to have children who are at greater risk for drug-taking behavior.
