WALTER J'S NEWS YOU CAN USE
February 2024
A MESSAGE FROM PRINCIPAL BARNETT
Greetings Bulldog Community,
The month of February is full of celebrations. Our students will engage in lessons and activities to learn African American heritage, participate in a Wax Muesum, celebrate 100 days of school, and enjoy a week of Reading Across Mitchell.
Kindness is the core value for the month. We are teaching our students how to show others that they are valuable by the way you treat them. With so much negativity and sadness happening in our world, we definitely want to spread kindness to one another. We also are showing kindness to our school counselor during National School Counseling Week. We appreciate Ms. Herlinger for supporting our students.
Report cards were released on January 29th. They can be viewed in Parent Vue. Parents are encouraged to contact their student's teacher to schedule a conference to discuss progress and/or if there are any questions on how to support your scholar at home. The third marking period is already here, and we continue to encourage our students to report to school on time in order to be ready to learn.
Thank you for taking a few moments to read this month's News You Can Use. We appreciate your continued partnership in support of student achievement.
I wish you all much peace, love and mounds of joy.
Respectfully,
Diedra L. Barnett, Principal

TIDBITS FROM ILT
FROM MS. ROBERTS, READING RESOURCE TEACHER
Vocabulary is Vital
Vocabulary plays a key role in the reading process and is critical to reading comprehension. Children with a rich vocabulary have an easier time learning to read than those with a limited vocabulary. As children learn to sound out words, they’ll reach into their store of words to figure out what they mean. Children learn the meanings of many words indirectly, through daily experiences with oral and written language.
The good news is you can work on expanding and enriching your child's vocabulary at home. Here are some simple ways you can work on developing your child's vocabulary.
1. Read.
Even if children are strong readers, read to and with them. This will give you an opportunity to select books that challenge them and offer new words to discuss.
2. Use a rich vocabulary yourself.
Purposefully use interesting and unusual words. Your children may not understand all the words you use so take time to explain their meanings.
3. Build a word wall or word window.
Get some paper and write down the words you are learning or write the words on a window with window markers.
4. Play this vocabulary game as a family.
At dinner or another time when you are all together, have one person choose a word, and everyone else thinks of synonyms. The person who thinks of the most synonyms wins and gets to choose the next word.
The rewards will be substantial if you incorporate a few of these activities into your daily routine.

Monthly Character Trait
Each month, one or two students are recognized from each class for displaying a particular character trait. They receive a certificate and have their picture taken.
February's character trait is kindness, which means showing others they are valuable by how you treat them.
Congratulations to all of the students who got recognized in January for showing responsibility!

The MAEF Lab is visiting WJM!
The Maryland Agricultural Education Foundation has been in existence since 1989 as a non-profit organization dedicated to teaching students the importance of agriculture and how it affects their daily lives. One important facet of this organization is their mobile science lab.
We were fortunate enough to be able to secure another visit by MAEF’s Lab from January 29th-February 2nd in the parking area behind the boiler room. Please see the schedule for classrooms visits.
This lab is designed to teach Maryland K-5 students the importance of agriculture in their everyday lives while aligning within our science curricular goals. Mr. Snyder selected the Agriculture Lab investigations and mini lessons for our students. Our students will become food scientists as they discover the properties of candy and determine which candy bars will sink or float.
