Dragon News
Findley Elementary School
September 27, 2019
Good Afternoon Findley Families,
Wow! Our first month of school has flown by. Teachers and staff have been busy getting to know kids, building relationships and teaching and practicing school-wide expectations and procedures. Students have been busy getting back into routines for being readers, writers and mathematicians. All in all, it’s been a smooth start to the year. Thank you Findley Families for your part in making that happen.
We have a busy week ahead of us. Wednesday, October 2 we will be celebrating Walk + Roll Day. I encourage you all to get out your bikes, and walk or roll to school that day. We will be handing out raffle tickets for prizes; which will include bike helmets and bells. Thursday, October 3, is picture day. Friday, October 4 is the Dragon Dash, keep your fingers crossed for good weather.
There is a lot of information contained in the newsletter this month, including information about how you can provide feedback to BSD regarding the Student Success Act as well as TAG/CoGat information. Please do read on!
Have a great weekend,
Sherry Marsh, Ed.D.

Beaverton Education Foundation Phone-a-Thon October 9-17 - Answer the Call!
The 21st Beaverton Education Foundation Phone-a-thon takes place October 9-17, 2019. This annual dialing tradition provides critical funds that support innovative educational programs for students in the Beaverton community. During the five-fun-filled nights, more than 350 student volunteers make over 30,000 phone calls, dedicating their time, energy and enthusiasm to supporting BEF programs.
Last year, BEF served over 27,000 Beaverton students in grades K-12, funding 124 academic programs or projects. Through this funding from our supporters and community engagement, $390,603 was invested back into our schools.
This year our goal is to fund 130 projects impacting 30,000 students. Together, we will make it happen.
The Phone campaign and the associated mailings are the Foundations largest fundraising activity of the year. Funds raised are reinvested in a wide variety of after and summer school programs for students at all of Beaverton public schools. Please Answer the Call for our students!

International Walk + Bike to School Day - Oct. 2
Wednesday, Oct. 2, 2019 is International Walk + Bike to School Day. We also call it Walk+Roll Day, to celebrate all types of active transportation — biking as well as riding scooters, skateboards and even your school bus. It’s great for us, our kids and it’s great for the community. Here are five top reasons:
- Fewer vehicles reduces traffic congestion and carbon emissions near schools and in school parking lots.
- More people on foot and bike builds school community and boosts awareness of all road users around schools.
- Physical activity boosts kids’ readiness to learn and brings long-lasting health benefits.
- Kids have fun with their friends and bond with their families while walking or rolling together.
- Being outside builds independence, resilience and lifelong transportation skills. If your child would like to walk to school with a volunteer-led group, join in a Walking School Bus or ask your administrator or Green Team to start one.
Your Help Needed!
Please use this link to fill out our quick form. https://forms.gle/eoUSytZSqrQ9iqai8
Your child's safety is the most important thing to us and appreciate your assistance. Please encourage your Day Care to provide us with a list of students they pick as well.
Before and After School Safety
- Always turn RIGHT out of the parking lot between 8:15-8:45 AM and 3:00-3:30 PM
- Never drop off your child on Saltzman, this is not safe.
- The front parking lot is NOT open during these times.
Walking to and from school?
- Please always cross the street with your students at the corner of Saltzman & Thompson where we have crossing guards.
- Students should walk their scooters and bikes once on the property and please stay on the sidewalks for safety.

Speak Up 4 Student Success: HB 3427 - Student Success Act
The Oregon Legislature passed and the Governor signed the $2 billion Student Success Act (HB 3427) in Spring 2019. This is an historic and much needed investment in K-12 schools. The Beaverton School District could be able to access an estimated $34 million per year through a state application process.
School districts are required to apply for funds, and must engage their community in a needs assessment process prior to the application for funds. We will host a series of Community Conversations - Speak Up 4 Student Success in several locations throughout the BSD. Schools will also be engaging their communities in these conversations during September and October.
Please join us to talk about what student success looks like in the Beaverton School District? What is going well in Beaverton schools? What areas/services/programs could we improve?
Your voice matters! We welcome your perspective and opinion.
