Principal's Message
Hello Springwater Students and Families,
I hope students were able to find some time to relax and escape school over spring break. Can you believe we are just 2 weeks away from the 12-week grading period? The semester is flying by and the end of the year will be here before we know it! Yesterday we had one of our last senior meetings prior to graduation. We will have 1 or 2 more meetings in May. It is wonderful to see seniors buckling down, despite their senioritis, and doing what it takes to cross the finish line.
April also means welcoming a new group of Titans to STHS! We wrapped up all of our interviews in March and letters will be going out today to applicants and their families. We had a wonderful group of 8th graders who applied to STHS. I wish we could enroll each and every one of them!
This past Wednesday we had about 35 students participate in the National Protest regarding Gun Violence. The group, by and large, did not disrupt classes and were respectful to staff and other students. After about an hour, most students returned to class. A small group chose to travel to Walmart and did not return to class. STHS did the best we could to identify these students and place calls home. All students who participated in the protest were marked "unexcused absence" for the classes they missed, which triggers an autodialer to guardians. An unexcused absence for protesting will not lead to any negative disciplinary measures from the school. Reflecting on the afternoon, I appreciated students' respect for each person's individual choice whether to participate. I also appreciated the staff's flexibility to monitor the situation to ensure things continued to run smoothly, both in and out of the building.
We have received a couple questions inquiring why this week's protest cannot be counted as an "excused absence", even when parents called and approved their student's participation. The criteria for determining an "excused absence" is set by the Gresham-Barlow School Board in alignment with criteria from the Oregon Department of Education. A student’s absence from school or class will be excused under the following circumstances:
1. Illness, including mental and behavioral health of the student;
2. Illness of an immediate family member when the student’s presence at home is necessary;
3. Emergency situations that require the student’s absence;
4. Student is a dependent of a member of the U.S. Armed Forces who is on active duty or who is called to active duty. The student may be excused for up to seven days during the school year;
5. Field trips and school-approved activities;
6. Religious instruction;
7. Medical (including dental) appointments.
Enjoy the weekend and please reach out with questions.

Future Plans After High School: Go pro playing basketball. As long as I get to play, have fun, get the money, then I’m good.
Grade: 9
Interests: Basketball, any type of sports period, anime, and things of that nature
Favorite subject in school: That would have to be science, because I’m curious about a lot of things.
Favorite thing about STHS: The people. I love the people, the people love me. I get major props at this school.
David Krivoruchenko
Future Plans After High School: Working with my brothers. They are working at Warn. They basically fix winches.
Grade: 10
Interests: I like to play basketball, do sports, and work on vehicles and motors.
Favorite subject in school: PE, because I like to do sports and that goes in my category.
Favorite thing about STHS: It’s small and we get to learn stuff in the school really fast compared to bigger schools, like Barlow.
Leo Decklar
Future Plans After High School: I’m probably going to go to Mt. Hood for a year, because next year I’m doing Middle College for the full year. I don’t know if I’m going to Southern Oregon yet, but we’ll find out. I want to study theater.
Grade: 11
Interests: I like theater, ukulele, singing, dancing, and interacting with people. People are great. I love people.
Favorite subject in school: It’s either art or, sometimes, math. Not because it’s math, but because math teachers have a really interesting sense of humor.
Favorite thing about STHS: I like the kind of freedom you have and you get to do what you want to do. Most of the time, you get to do things that might matter in the future, which isn’t normally what other high schools do, and that’s great.
