This time is a season of giving and joy, but it can also be a difficult time of year. Let’s not forget that no matter how tough our day may seem or how frustrated we get with others, everyone has something in their daily lives that they must overcome, even when they appear to be carefree and joyful. There is power in sharing with others and returning the favor when needed. Too often, we hold our struggles inside rather than reaching out for support. We find ways (unfortunately often unhealthy ones) to deal with the problems we face. As we go through the holiday season and beyond, spend time being there for each other. Share your stories and listen without responding when others are sharing theirs. Remember that every challenge you overcome helps you become better. Every challenge we overcome together, makes us all better.

Week 17: Grateful Friday Challenge

Hello, Friday! We needed you to be here. We have had a rough week as a Southport family. Family sticks together in good times and in bad times. Check out this short video from The University of Minnesota’s football coach PJ Fleck. I love how he defines F.A.M.I.L.Y.

This week, your #SHSGFC challenge is to spread the love by writing handwritten notes to your students or colleagues. Write another staff member a note, put some post-its on students' desks, share some positive vibes on student work, or put some post-it notes up in some areas that might need a little cheer. Spread some positivity today...we need it!!

With banners flying as we go…

Working with our EL department, Nicole Seal and Courtney Stewert from the district office helped assess the reading ability of some of our EL students this week. This work compliments the efforts of Amy Gaisser as we are looking for systems and structures we can use to better support many of our EL students as they continue to grow at SHS.

There were two music concerts this week. Our Performing Arts Department worked together to put on two different Holiday performances to showcase the talents of our students. We appreciate the cooperation of the Performing Arts Department to combine different music groups and create great performances for our families.

This week at the Southport and Perry Meridian Wrestling meet. Coach Skinner and the Athletic Department honored wrestlers from last year's State Runner-up Girls Wrestling Program. Kyla Johnson, AnnaMae Mosconi, and Avalyn Mosconi were awarded their state runner-up rings. Kyla Johnson and Avalyn Mosconi were also state champions last year in their weight class and were given a second ring for this recognition. Thank you to Coach Skinner for organizing this ceremony.

The science lab is always put to great use. This week Mr. Duncan's Chemistry students worked to identify the properties of ionically bonded compounds. Mrs. Tejchma's Integrated Physics and Chemistry students were also in the lab examining at properties of different compounds so they could identify an unknown compound that they were given.

This week, Ms. Neville took groups of students to the Greenwood Kohl's to participate in the Ray Skillman Clothe-A-Child program. Students were shopping for Christmas presents for children of various ages, from babies to age 18. The children are from Johnson County and Perry Township. The groups were given a folder containing clothing sizes, toy ideas, and shoe sizes. They then had to shop within a budget for each child. Thank you to Ms. Neville for providing this experience for our students!
