Family Newsletter-September 2022
Welcome Back
We are SO excited to be back and in the building and seeing your students EVERY day Monday-Friday! We had a GREAT start to the school year this past week! We enjoyed the smiling faces, hugs and AWESOME attitudes each day as our students learned the schedule and structure of school again. We thank you, families for bringing them each day, ensuring they got on the bus and made the walk to and from school. It takes each of us to ensure a WONDERFUL school year. Thank you for playing your part and playing it well!
PBIS Corner
Positive Behavior Intervention & Supports
What is PBIS?
It is a process for creating school environments that are more predictable and effective for achieving academic and social goals.
How Does it Work?
A key strategy of the PBIS is prevention. The majority of students follow the school's expectations, but are never acknowledged for their positive behavior. Through instruction, comprehension, and regular practice, all teachers and staff members will use a consistent set of behavioral rules. We will view it as an opportunity for reteaching, not just punishing.
How can YOU help?
You are an important part of PBIS implementation. We encourage families to use the same expectations that we teach at school. This common language creates consistency and a unified support for expected students behavior. Children thrive when they have consistent, predictable expectations and consequences.
At Binns we are striving to be at 95% attendance this school year!!
We would LOVE if you could help us ensure that your students are ON TIME which means before 9:00am when tardy bell rings.
HOWEVER, if you are needing to miss school please send an e-mail to attendance.binns@columbus.k12.oh.us. You can even attach your excuse from the doctor or professional to the e-mail. We hope this will save you time and remembering to send the excuse in! :)
Getting into the habit of daily attendance can:
reduce stress
make it easier to connect with friends and teachers
support learning
In an effort to help promote attendance, we will be doing incentives for BOTH our students and our families. Stay tuned!!

Lucy Farr
My name is Lucy Farr, and I am the new, full-time school counselor at Binns! I will be at the school all five days each week, so I am very excited to get to know your students and support them in any way they need. I recently graduated from the University of Cincinnati with my Master of Education, so I feel very fortunate to start my career at Binns.
I am originally from Cincinnati, so I am a HUGE Skyline Chili and Graeter's fan! I've worked with children my whole life, which is why I was drawn to elementary counseling. I strive to be a strong support for my students and will provide unconditional positive regard to each and every one of them. My role this year will be to continue the programs and groups that have been implemented by Mrs. Zwahlen, as well as provide additional support through brief individual counseling, small groups, and classroom lessons where needed.
Please feel free to reach out to me with any questions, comments, or concerns. I look forward to working with you and your students.

Brandi Jones
My name is Brandi Jones, and I am the school psychologist for Binns Elementary School. School psychologists help children succeed academically, socially, and emotionally. They work with teachers, parents, and other professionals to create safe, healthy, and supportive learning environments for all students that strengthen connections between home and school.
I live in Plain City with my husband, two children (ages 10 and 13), and dog. When I am not at school, I like to work out, watch my kids play soccer, and walk my dog. The Ohio State Buckeyes and Columbus Crew are my two favorite sports teams, and I enjoy watching the games in person or on TV.
