A Note from Ms. Ellison
Dear Glen Grove Families,
Thank you all for your participation in our curriculum night. It was great to see so many of you engaged in your child’s classroom and partnering with us around your child’s education.
At Glen Grove, we are committed to supporting the whole child and are embedding social/emotional learning across our school. For the next few weeks, our teachers are using the Second Step curriculum to focus on growth mindset and student goal setting. We also continue to have a school-wide focus on kindness. Building a safe and supportive environment is our number one priority.
On September 18th the district office will be emailing out every child’s NWEA scores to families accompanied by a letter that explains the scores. Overall our students did an excellent job on this assessment, especially since it was the first time our third graders have taken it. If you have any questions about this measure, please feel free to reach out to your teacher or to me.
Often at this time of year, families start to reach out asking how they can help their child at home. We firmly believe that parents are a child’s first teacher and there is so much value to the home learning environment. First and foremost, you can encourage a love of reading and healthy reading habits at home. If your child needs a good book, they can check out as many as they want in our LRC! Additionally, there are many tools that your child can use to reinforce skills. If they have not already shown you IXL on their iPads, make sure to check it out. There are many literacy and math skills that can be practiced at home. Finally, families can help develop language and vocabulary through talking at home. Encouraging discourse at home about books, current events, and experiences helps students develop background knowledge and language skills.

District 34 has launched a quick and easy way to see the most up-to-date lunch menus: Choosi!
You can access menus two ways through Choosi and you're sure the get the most up-to-date lunch menus -- menus are subject to change daily due to product availability:
- Download the Choosi app on your mobile device (Apple or Google)
- Access menus on your browser
Either way, search Glenview Ccsd 34 and then select your school (or just search for your school name). View live menus including nutrient and allergen info. This is available to all parents, students and staff with no login required.
K-5 schools’ monthly menus will be placed in each teacher’s mailbox each month this school year.
Glen Grove Attendance :
All student absences should be called into the health office no later than 7:45 a.m. at (847) 657-2394. The Health Office has voicemail so parents can call to leave messages at any time.
If you do not notify your Student's school of your child's absence your student will have an UNEXCUSED ABSENCE for the day,
Illness:
If your student is sick please keep your child home until he/she is feeling well, symptoms have improved and fever free for over 24 hours without fever reducing medications and no vomiting or diarrhea for more than 24 hours.
Student Medications kept at school:
New D34 Medication Administration and Emergency Action forms need to be completed for the 2023-2024 School year. The medication forms are valid if dated after June 8,2023.
You may drop-off medications at Glen Grove on or after August 22, 2023. Please be sure you have the D34 Medication Administration form completed and provide the medication in its original container. The medication should not expire before the end of the school year, May 31, 2024. If you have medication Administration questions please contact Jennifer Hastings, Glen Grove School Nurse.
If your student has a food allergy or asthma please provide a Food Allergy Action Plan or an Asthma Action Plan along with the D34 medication Administration Form.
Please be sure to sign section III of the medication administration form ( back of Medication Administration form) Also sign the parent portion Emergency Action form if applicable.
#BeWell34 News From Our Health Office
As we get closer to flu season, we want to remind families about our health and safety protocols. It is difficult for a child who is not feeling well to learn. It's best for them to stay home until they are well enough to have a positive, productive and healthy school experience. Please keep your child at home if they have:
- Fever (temperature of 100.4°F or greater)
- Vomiting
- Diarrhea
- Undiagnosed rash
- Communicable diseases
- Pink eye
- Head lice infestation (live head lice)
Before a student may return to school, he/she must be free of fever, vomiting and/or diarrhea (without fever-reducing medication) for 24 hours. If a student has been prescribed antibiotic medication for a rash, communicable diseases and/or pink eye they may return to school after completing 24 hours of prescribed medication.
You can find the full attendance policies and absence reporting information on the District 34 website.
Inevitably, we all misplace things. To assist us in reuniting your student with his or her lost item (water bottle, lunch box, clothing/outerwear, gym shoes, etc), please label items with your students name. It can be first name & last initial or first initial & last name, whatever you prefer. This way, we can be of more assistance with locating lost items and maybe keep our Lost and Found less crowded!

What Does Your Student Have Checked Out?
Students are always able to check their library account from their iPad. They need to sign in to the Destiny Discover shortcut (not an app). Using their username (lfunke) and their regular password (G2024-XXXX). Then go to the top of the page, under MY STUFF, then Checkouts. Students can also view their Hold, History, and Favorites. Students can even renew their books one time (for each title) from their account.
The Sora App
Students have this app on their iPads. They can check out audio and eBooks from the Glenview Public Library (which is called the Digital Library of Illinois on the app). At the start of each school year, students are given a lesson on how to log-in and use the app. If you have questions about Sora please email me at lfunke@glenview34.org

Looking to Help in the Library?
We are always on the lookout for volunteers to shelve books throughout the day. If you have time, we are happy to show you the ins and outs of shelving. Make your own schedule, it can be once a week or once a month, we gladly accept any help.
Our 4th grade geologists have begun to explore how natural processes can change Earth's surface through 4 mini-lab activities. Please ask your students all about the clay, sand, ice and water-based mini Earth processes models they worked with. Next week we will be moving science outside to conduct a larger scaled lab activity using more sand, water, and stream tables before we take a break from the mess. At that point we'll transition to taking a closer look at home (Illinois) and how Earth processes have changed our state's landscape. Stay tuned for more!

The GGCP is an ongoing initiative to learn about, celebrate, and highlight the traditions and customs of our students and families. We have a vibrant and supportive community, and we enjoy celebrating with them. We have funding this year from the Glenview Education Fund (GEF) to continue our work, and we have many exciting plans for the upcoming school year.
