The end of HA!
This was our last week of HA math for the year!
Monday & Tuesday will be our last days of HA language arts for the year.
The year has flown by!
First Grade Language Arts
We are spending our last few classes learning about ancient Egyptian hieroglyphics. I introduced the lesson by playing "Walk Like an Egyptian" and reading a fun Ms. Frizzle book. Hieroglyphics are interesting because some hieroglyphs have meaning similar to letters and other hieroglyphs represent words. We will be making connections between our language and theirs.
First Grade Math
After I passed back the graded assessments & we discussed them, the students and I finished the year with some sweet and fun activities. It was nice to learn some new things about one another. For example, I loved hearing that a couple of you have goats. I enjoyed telling the class about my three dogs (yorkie, basset hound, and English mastiff). We really had such a nice time together. Your kids are precious.
Second Grade Language Arts
Being the class loved our two novel studies this year, they definitely believe what they’re writing in their persuasive paragraphs! Students began writing their final copies of their paragraphs persuading people to read books by Kate DiCamillo.
Second Grade Math
The students finished their post-assessments. After we finished taking care of business, the students and I finished the year with a sharing activity. One thing students like about HA is being in here with students that are in other homerooms, so I wanted to let them enjoy being together one last time. We had such a nice time together.
Third Grade Language Arts
The class worked hard to wrap up loose ends, put the finishing touches on their projects, and prepare to present their projects. They are officially done working on Fairy Tale Tic Tac Toe. At this point, anything that isn't complete will be left undone. They will present their projects and perform their plays on our last two days of HA. I can't wait to watch them share their hard work with the class!
Third Grade Math
The students finished their post-assessments. After we finished taking care of business, the students and I finished the year with a sharing activity. One thing students like about HA is being in here with students that are in other homerooms, so I wanted to let them enjoy being together one last time. This is a lively bunch that wants to socialize, so they appreciated how we ended the year. We had a nice time focusing on one another.
4th Graders Rock! Now it’s time to learn to use a lock!
Kids are excited to have lockers in intermediate school, but they are often nervous about opening their lockers. Learning how to use a lock gives them confidence, so I gave each 4th grader a lock to master.
Fourth Grade Language Arts
The ending of this book has quite a twist! Please make sure your student does their homework by Monday so they can enjoy the novel study with the rest of the class.
Homework: Read chapters 22-26 by Monday
Fourth Grade Math
This year in math has been really great! These kids are all so bright in their own way. We've spent a lot of time sharing how one another thinks through math problems. They've been open to learning from each other, and they've helped each other. It's really special to be a part of their meeting of the minds. I've given them a valuable introduction to algebra. Even if they seem to forget or get real rusty, their algebra foundation will still be there. I love that they've asked me to show them things that aren't necessarily part of our HA curriculum. Upon their request last year and this year, I've worked in lessons on the following: multiplying large numbers, long division, integers (adding, subracting, and multiplying), various things about fractions, exponents, order of operations, and decimals. I love when they come in and say things like, "hey, I saw ______ on NWEA (or a math program), can you show me what that is about?" I am truly sad that our time together has come to an end. I know they will all succeed at the intermediate school. I hope along the way they will hear me in the back of their minds telling them to read a word problem three times to interpret the problem, show their work neatly, truly check their work, and make sure their answer makes sense with the problem. When they have to answer a problem in sentences, I hope they remember me encouraging them to trust their voice and write their explanation the same as they'd explain it verbally. I'll keep my eyes and ears out for them in the years to come, I'm sure they'll make names for themselves as they continue on in the district.
One of the things kids like about being in HA is being in here with students from other homerooms. After a serious year of algebra (and other misc. math skills), we ended the year with activities that focused on one another. I'm going to miss this class so much!
