Principal's Message
Dear Towson High School Community,
As today marks the midpoint of the first marking period, I wanted to take a moment to reflect on our shared vision and provide updates and reminders of the supports that are available to all students and parent/guardians. Our vision is simple – for all members of our Towson High School learning community to thrive. For students, this means that we want to see them thriving academically, as well as socially and emotionally. To support this vision, we offer several valuable resources and supports:
- Weekly Coach Class with Individual Teachers: Weekly Coach Class provides an opportunity for students to receive personalized guidance and support from their teachers. Please access the Coach Class Schedule for each teachers’ Coach Class dates, times, locations, and email addresses.
- Weekly Peer Tutoring: Peer Tutoring is free, fantastic way for students to learn from their peers who have mastered specific subjects. Peer Tutoring sessions also include teacher advisors who are also available to assist as needed. Please access the Peer Tutoring Schedule for subject-specific Peer Tutoring dates, times, locations, and teacher advisors.
- School Counselors: We understand that students may face a variety of issues that can impact their overall well-being and academic performance. Our School Counselors can assist students by providing an additional layer of support. Please access the School Counseling website to contact the School Counseling team.
- Check Student's Progress in Real-Time: Parents/guardians can use their BCPS FOCUS account to check their student's academic progress and attendance in real-time. Once logged into FOCUS, select the link to Schoology to view grades and assignments. Please access these directions to log into and navigate the parent/guardian FOCUS account.
- Communicate with Teachers & Instructional Coaches: If there is a question about a grade or an assignment, please connect with teachers via email or phone. Instructional Coaches (formerly referred to as Department Chairs) also provide subject-specific support. Please access the Coach Class Schedule for teachers’ email addresses. Please reference the list below for Instructional Coaches.

Testing Information
Overview
As part of a comprehensive strategy to ensure access and opportunity for all students, BCPS provides important career and college readiness examinations to secondary students. Please see the BCPS Community Message and information below regarding testing opportunities for students.
PSAT
The PSAT provides an important measure of each student’s readiness for advanced coursework, college and careers, and preparation for future college readiness examinations. On October 17, the PSAT will be administered to all Grade 10 students, and Grade 11 students who opted-in to take the test (deadline to opt-in was September 22). For more info about the PSAT, please contact Mr. Tormey stormey@bcps.org
ACT *New This Year*
This year, BCPS is providing students in Grades 11 and 12 with an opportunity to take the ACT at no cost. Students will be provided with a pre-paid voucher that they will use when they register for the ACT. ACT is a national administration given on Saturday at multiple locations (ACT Test Center Locator). Students may request a voucher from their school counselor by completing this form (access the form through student's BCPS Google account). The process to receive a voucher takes approximately 3 business days. In 2023-2024, the ACT will be administered on October 28, December 9, February 10, April 13, June 8, and July 13. Students are responsible for any late registration fees. For more information about the ACT and the ACT pre-paid voucher, please contact your student's School Counselor at 443-809-3613.
SAT - School Day Administration
The SAT is administered to all Grade 11 students during the school day in spring of each year. Please note that students taking the SAT during a school day must adhere to the same testing protocols that take place on national testing dates, including services for students with disabilities. For more information about the SAT School Day Administration, please contact Ms. Monacelli rmonacelli@bcps.org
SAT - National Administrations
Students may also access national administrations of the SAT or ACT that are offered by these organizations, typically on Saturdays. Students registering for national administrations are responsible for the cost of their exam or through fee waivers available through the College Board or ACT. Please access the following links for more information: SAT, ACT.
Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB)
The ASVAB is administered to measure a student’s developed skills and abilities that help predict future academic and occupational success in the military. It also provides an interest inventory for students. For more information about the ASVAB, please contact Mr. Tormey stormey@bcps.org
Requesting Testing Accommodations
In order to request testing accommodations for the PSAT, SAT/ACT or AP exams please contact your student's School Counselor to begin the process. The counselor (or designated staff member) enters contact information, requested accommodations, information about the student’s disability, and information about any formal accommodation plans. The families will work with school staff to submit documentation for the College Board to make a decision. Please access the following links for more information: College Board, ACT. For more information about SAT testing accommodations, please contact Mr. Malloyrmalloy@bcps.org. For more information about ACT testing accommodations, please contact Ms. Petras mpetras@bcps.
National Hispanic Heritage Month

In Advisory next week, classes will decorate their doors for a contest, with the winners announced on the last week of Hispanic Heritage Month.
BusWhere App
BCPS is pleased to announce the countywide implementation of BusWhere, a location tracking software that allows subscribers to see bus locations in real time on a mobile phone or computer. Via the BusWhere app, subscribers may opt to receive notification as the bus is approaching a designated bus stop or if there are significant delays.
BCPS families can expect to receive an email invitation from BusWhere to create an account the week of October 1, 2023. Watch this informational video to learn more about BusWhere!

Mrs. Petras, School Counselor
This past summer, Mrs. Petras participated in the 2023 Teacher Externship Program sponsored by the Maryland Chamber of Commerce. The four-week summer program is designed to build bridges between businesses and educators by pairing high school educators with top Maryland businesses who provide hands-on experience in critical industries. 5th Annual Men’s Soccer Cancer Awareness Game
On Friday September 22nd the Towson Generals Men’s Soccer program hosted the 5th annual Men’s Soccer Cancer Awareness Game. Six (6) years ago, our head coach, Randy Dase was diagnosed with prostate cancer. The boys on the team that year hosted a benefit game in his honor to raise awareness of prostate cancer. They raised over $1,000 and donated the proceeds to the Johns Hopkins Hospital and the Brady Institute for Prostate Cancer Research. In the five (5) years since, the cancer awareness game has been able to raise more than $20,000 for cancer research. Since his surgery, Coach Dase has been cancer free for seven (7) years. Thank you to all our players, parents (current and former), alumni, and the Dulaney High School community for their generous donations throughout the years.

One Love Foundation
On Wednesday September 20, 2023, Towson Girl’s Soccer program dedicated their game to the One Love Foundation. The One Love Foundation was founded to honor the unnecessary and tragic death of Yeardley Love, a University of Virginia lacrosse player, by engaging young people through compelling, relatable films and honest conversations around healthy relationship behaviors. One Love empowers young people with the tools and resources they need to see the signs of healthy and unhealthy relationships and bring life-saving prevention education to their communities.
If you or someone care about is struggling with an unhealthy relationship, please visit the joinonelove.org website to learn about available resources or download the free myPlan app that will help with safety decisions. Everyone deserves to be safe in their intimate relationships, and every situation is unique. Please see Mrs. Nash in learning cottage 4 to join Towson High's One Love.

Attendance Matters
Research has shown that attendance is a leading predictor of academic achievement and adult success. Students who find attending school important are more likely to attain goals like attending trade school, college, or getting a job. By showing up to school every day, students develop a positive work ethic and prepare for future success by developing healthy and productive habits.
Our attendance goals this year are for students to maintain at least a 94% attendance rate and to reduce chronic absenteeism. A student that misses 10% or more of school days in chronically absent. By missing just 2 days a month, a student will be chronically absent. Use the "Attendance Tracker" and "Parent Tips" below to support your student in maintaining satisfactory attendance. Additionally, we will send parents/guardians a "Weekly Attendance Report" each Friday afternoon so you can track your student's daily and period attendance.
