Tiger Tales from Sanborn School
Week of February 27, 2023
Dear Sanborn Families,
February has been an exciting month for our students at Sanborn School! Some of these exciting events include:
-Valentine's Day Celebrations in each classroom,
-A 2nd Grade Field Trip to see Charlotte's Web in Schaumburg,
-Golden Paw BINGO Celebrations for Ms. Musgrove's 5th grade class and Ms. Volkmar's 4th grade class,
-Kindness Week Activities,
-An AIME Community Field Trip to Mariano's,
-6th Grade Boys and Girls 2-Ball events at Falcon Park, and
-An All-School Connect 4 Tournament to celebrate the end of trimester 2!
In addition to these events, our students have been hard at work learning and participating in innovative lessons each day in the classroom. Trimester 2 closed on Friday, and you can see your child's progress by viewing their report card through the Infinite Campus Parent Portal. Starting March 6, students in grades 3-6 will be taking the yearly state mandated assessment: The Illinois Assessment of Readiness. Students will take tests in both ELA and Math. After Spring Break, students in grades 2-6 will complete Spring MAP testing in Reading and Math. Additionally, there will be spring benchmarking assessments and the 5th grade science assessment occurring in April.
It is hard to believe that Trimester 3 begins today, but we are excited to see our students learning and growing each day. Thank you for your continued support, and please reach out to me with any questions.
Warmly,
Kate Arenberg, Principal
Bus Lane Safety Reminder
Due to a significant increase in car traffic in the bus circle causing safety concerns during morning arrival, we are sending out a reminder with our drop off and pick up procedures.
From 8:00 a.m. to 8:25 a.m. each morning, and from 2:50 p.m. until 3:15 p.m., NO CARS will be able to enter the front bus circles off of Oak Street. All traffic that arrives there will be directed to the Wood Street parent drop off/pick up location behind the school. As a reminder - you should never pass a bus with a stop sign out and lights flashing.
All parents that wish to drop off/pick up their children should stay in their cars and drive through the back parking lot car lane off of Wood Street. Staff will be there to greet students and help them from their cars. For families that wish to walk their children to the door, or park their car to drop them off or pick them up, there are a small number of parking spots along Wood Street and on Oak Street. Please do not drop your child off along Oak Street and ask them to cross the road and bus traffic without your supervision.
Thank you for your help with this as we continue to keep student safety a top priority.
Valentine's Day Celebrations!
Mrs. Garcia's 1st grade class enjoyed some props for photos on Valentine's Day!
Kindness Week!
Sanborn students participated in a variety of Kindness Week activities!
Palatine Public Library Visits!
The Palatine Library visited our 6th grade classrooms to explore Ozobots.
Monthly Staff Highlight: 4th Grade Team
Math: students are starting their 4th unit in math. In this unit, students will read, write and compare numbers in decimal notation. They will also extend place value understanding for multi-digit whole numbers and add and subtract within 1,000,000.
Science: students will finish their current units this month. In March, all 4th graders will study Birds of Prey with a deep look into Owls. We will have a special presentation from The Stillman Nature Center where they will bring in live birds of prey from their rescue center for our students to see! We would like to thank the PTA for helping make this happen for our 4th graders!
Social Studies: we are learning about the regions of the US while focusing on the Midwest, the states and capitals and why it is called the Heartland of America.
Reading and Writing: students are finishing up their writing assignment celebrating our 100th day of school imagining what they will be like when they are 100 years old. Look for these to be hanging up when you come to Open House this May!
We attended an amazing presentation from author Jeff Miller! It was so cool to see an actual author in person and listening to them share their story on how he became an author!
4th graders continue to work on following Tiger Traits in and out of the classroom.
If your child is interested in participating in band or orchestra next year and you missed the registration on Infinite Campus, please email Mrs. Bruno (brunol@ccsd15.net) or Mr. Mitchell (mitchelt@ccsd15.net) directly and they will include your child on the registration list.
Monthly Staff Highlight: Multilingual Team
All multilingual students have been hard at work for the past 4 weeks taking the ACCESS test. ACCESS is an annual test our multilingual students take to assess growth in English. We are so proud of all our multilingual students!
We have many new multilingual students who have joined Sanborn this year--a majority of these students from Ukraine. On Mondays and Fridays, these students have been able to participate in what we call the “Breakfast Club” before classes start where they can gather and speak in their native language and socialize.
After ACCESS testing is complete, multilingual staff will continue to support our students with English language and Native language support.

From the PTA

Currently, we do not have any spring events planned. We would love your support and creative ideas to help plan some fun events for our students and families this spring. If you are interested in volunteering for any spring events, please join our next meeting or reach out to Sanborn's PTA President- Caitlin Butler (caitlindbutler@yahoo.com). We are also in need of filling executive board positions for next school year. Without these important positions, our PTA will not be able to function and provide support for students and families.
5Essentials Information
Dear District 15 Families,
January 23rd through March 31, 2023, students and teachers in District 15 and across Illinois are asked to participate in the annual statewide Illinois 5Essentials Survey. This survey is designed to generate a detailed picture of the inner workings of your child’s school. As a parent/guardian, this opportunity will allow you to share your thoughts on the important elements of school effectiveness in a survey about your child’s school.
The Illinois 5Essentials Survey gathers data related to five indicators that can be targeted to improve important student outcomes, including attendance and state test score gains. The 5Essentials Survey asks questions about:
- Effective Leaders
- Collaborative Teachers
- Involved Families
- Supportive Environments
- Ambitious Instruction
All District 15 teachers and 4th through 8th grade students will be asked to take this survey. 5Essentials Reports will be generated for schools if at least 50 percent of the teachers and students complete the survey. We need at least 20 percent of our parents/guardians from your child’s school to complete this survey for a parent/guardian supplement to also be generated for the school. This is an important source of information from our families.
Your identity and survey responses are completely confidential. The school does not have access to individual survey responses and cannot connect any survey responses to you or your child.
In District 15, the Illinois 5Essentials Survey for students and teachers will be conducted from January 23 to March 31, 2022. You may take the survey between these dates by visiting the 5Essentials Survey website and selecting the appropriate survey to begin.
For more information about the Illinois 5Essentials Survey, please visit the Illinois State Board of Education's website.
