Driller Way Word of the Month for February
Celebrating Black History Month
BLACK HISTORY MONTH FUN FACTS:
- Did you know Mr. Stewart, the teacher in IA-P4, is a former NFL player? Born and raised in Bakersfield, Mr. Stewart was a football and baseball star here at BHS prior to going to Fresno State where he played football. He was drafted by Major League Baseball 3 times but ultimately decided to go pro in football where he played for the Rams and the Dolphins prior to retiring.
- Who would have thought that the most celebrated gymnast in the world was also once just a little girl in foster care? Simone Biles did not allow her beginning to deter her from making her wildest dreams come true and though she was doubted by many, she is so amazing that she now has 5 extremely difficult gymnast moves named after her.
- Computer scientist Lisa Gelobter assisted with the 1995 creation of Shockwave, essential technology that led to the development of web animation. (So, we have her to thank for GIFs.)
- The oldest Black female Greek-letter organization, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. (AKA), was founded at Howard University in 1908. Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. (Alpha), the first Black male Greek-letter organization, was founded in 1906 at Cornell University.
- As we go into Super Bowl weekend, we would be remiss not to honor Coach Shehee, our head football coach, who was once a running back for the Kansas City Chiefs. Coach Shehee played football at Foothill, we won’t hold that against him, and then went on to play in college for the Washington Huskies. He played in both the NFL and XFL and was inducted into Foothill High School’s Hall of Fame in 2014 as well as the Bob Elias Kern County Sports Hall of Fame in 2016.
