Happy 100th Day of School!

Wednesday, Feb. 17, 2021 marked the 100th day of school! Check out some pictures of our students celebrating sharing several different activities and projects.

The students in K-Chiaravalloti, K-Tundo, and K-Woessner celebrated 100 days of learning by making unique 100th day of school projects. They were excited to share the creations with their classmates.

Ms. Odaman's kindergarten students at Charles Olbon School celebrated the 100th day of school and 100 days virtual in their case! Students made a 100th day snack which was presented during show and tell. The students also enjoyed listening to stories read aloud by Dr. Pillari and Mayor Kazmark.

Miss Webb's students at Charles Olbon School showcased their 100th day shirt creations.
Ms. Parker's class worked on several hands-on activities for the 100th day.

Ms. Trovato's pre-school students at Charles Olbon School marked the 100th day of school by reading stories about the 100th day and counting to 100 by ones, tens, and fives. The students used cereal to help them count. They also played a single beat on pots and pans which they used as drums 100 times. The students also increased their heart rates by dancing and jumping for 100 seconds.

Mrs. Macchiavello's first grade students at Charles Olbon School took part in 100th day crafts. They did a great job getting into the spirit.

Mrs. Hope’s second grade class at Charles Olbon School celebrated 100 days of school by wearing festive shirts and creating 100th day mystery bags. The students were asked to find 100 objects and write clues about their objects. Classmates took turns guessing the mystery objects.

Both Mrs. D’Amico's and Ms. Gutierrez's first grade classes at Charles Olbon School had so much fun celebrating the 100th day of school. Students were provided with choice as to how they wanted to celebrate this special day. Some students made shirts. Others shared collections of 100 things. There were even students who dressed up as though they were 100 years old!! They had a blast!

Ms. Antunez's first grade class at Charles Olbon School celebrated the 100th day of school by making "100 days smarter" hats and stringing 100 beads on a necklace.

Ms. Tonti’s first grade class at Charles Olbon School celebrated the 100th day by modeling their creative shirt designs. One student used her love of ice cream to make an ice cream cone shirt. Another student used his wish to ride in a hot air balloon as the basis for the shirt design. All students did a wonderful job participating in this "fashion show".

Sweet treats

Ms. Odaman's kindergarten class at Charles Olbon had a virtual pizza/snack party to mark Valentine's Day. They listened to "Pete the Cat and the Perfect Pizza Party" while enjoying pizza and snacks. These kindergarteners sure have stolen a "pizza" from their teacher's heart!

February celebrations

Thursday, Feb. 11 was a busy and fun day for Ms. Tonti's first grade students at Charles Olbon School! In honor of Abraham Lincoln's birthday on Feb. 12th, the students created a penny medallion. The students also celebrated the first day of the Chinese New Year with the creation of a dragon mask. Valentine's Day was also celebrated by participating in some Valentine's Day fun-loving activities!

Public input sought in search for next PVHS superintendent

After a 40-year career, Passaic Valley High School Superintendent Dr. JoAnn Cardillo is retiring in June. Part of the search for the next superintendent, being conducted by NJ School Boards, includes getting input from families and the community at large. All responses are anonymous and will be presented to the PVBOE as written. The survey may be found here.

Local Cub, Boy Scout troops launch "Bags of Hope" service project

Woodland Park Cub Scout Pack 31, and Boy Scouts Troop 238 of Woodland Park and Troop 12 of Montclair have launched "Bags of Hope," a service project that will benefit Tomorrow's Children at Hackensack University Medical Center, which serves children with cancer and blood disease.


Donations for children aged 10-20 to fill chemo care bags are being sought. The bags will be delivered to them this spring. Any items that tweens and teens might be interested in, to give them some comfort while they are undergoing chemo treatments, would be appreciated, such as fleece blankets, head wraps/hats, socks, non-scented lotion, magazines for teens, Mad Libs, journals, adult coloring books, etc. Collection boxes will be set up next week at the American Legion and Alfred Baumann Library.

Library, Stigma Free Task Force launch 1,000 Paper Cranes Project

Sadako Sasaki, a survivor of the Hiroshima bomb during World War II, was diagnosed with leukemia in 1950. From the moment of her diagnosis until her death in 1955, Sadako folded 1000 paper cranes as a way to cope with her illness. Her story has since been documented in two books.


Now the practice of folding cranes has become a symbol of love, hope, peace, and healing. The Alfred Baumann Library and the WP Stigma Free Task Force are proud to embark on this project to create 1,000 paper cranes to honor those who have suffered from COVID-19.


Anyone interested can pick up folding instructions and origami paper at the Library. Please drop off any completed cranes at the library by March 8. The goal is to collect 1,000 paper cranes and display them in the lobby for the entire town to see. Contact the Library for more information at 973-345-8120 or library@abwplibrary.org.

Thursday, Feb. 25, 6:30 pm - "One Room Schoolhouses in WP" with historian Rick Lijoi. Take a trip down memory lane to learn about our Borough's schools. Learn about one-room schoolhouses to our present schools. Discover what school was like back in the 1800s - some interesting stories of things in the past. You will receive the Zoom link after registering as we approach the meeting date. Register here.

Friday, Feb. 26, 6 p.m. - Join in for Virtual Bingo! Prizes will be available for winners. Please register each child individually. The Zoom meeting link and a Bingo card will be provided the day before the program. All ages welcome. Register here.

Thursday, March 4, 4 p.m. - Join William Paterson University Galleries for a Virtual Arts Education Workshop for grades four and five. Investigate themes of identity and masks through a discussion of the book "New Kid" by Jerry Craft (available on Hoopla) and the artist book titled "Runaway Girls" by Sarah Blake and Robin Kahn. Supplies for the craft will be available for pick up at the Library. Register here.
