The Synapse
Updates from the Sciences at Loyola University Maryland
May 2022 | Issue 43
The May issue of Synapse is dominated by news regarding special recognitions for the class of 2022. This year's graduating seniors have plenty to celebrate considering the combination of a typical first year experience, the disruption during the sophomore year due to the pandemic, the return of cicadas while attending classes in-person, or remote, or in hybrid format during the junior year, and glimpse of hope for emerging on the other side of the pandemic during the senior year. We salute the great accomplishments of class 2022 who have shown resilience and grit leading to successfully graduating in four years. They can also claim they perhaps own the record for using the term "you are muted". We look forward to congratulating the class of 2022 during the Loyola's commencement that will be in-person at M&T Bank Stadium on Saturday, May 14, https://www.loyola.edu/join-us/commencement. The event will be livestreamed for friends and family who cannot attend. Congratulation's seniors! This is your time to shine and to demonstrate what you have been prepared for while at Loyola, which is; "to learn, lead, and serve in a diverse and changing world".

HIGHLIGHTS & GENERAL ANNOUNCEMENTS
PH-120-W01 Introduction to the Universe (Maymester 2022)
This 3-week Maymester class (5/23-6/12) will be run online asynchronously, so it is perfect for students who work or have internships, since they will do the class work on their own schedule. Intro to the Universe fulfills the natural science core requirement.
Have you ever asked yourself these questions?
Where are we in the universe? How do we relate to the Sun, Moon, planets, and stars? How did the universe begin? What will happen to the universe in the future? Is there life in the universe besides us?
If you have, then you are about to reveal the answers during the next three weeks! This course provides an essential and fundamental survey of modern astronomy and helps you develop the ability to independently analyze and solve basic problems in astronomy, gain scientific reasoning ability, and truly understand where we are in this big universe. You will learn the fundamental laws of physics, such as the law of motion, universal law of gravity, and will apply these laws to understand astronomical systems (which include planets, stars and galaxies).
For details contact Dr. Inge Heyer (iheyer@loyola.edu).
Reminder to Loyola Researchers
In view of the possible summer programs, should a faculty be mentoring a high school or college student and desires to perform research involving human participants, the researchers are required to submit the plan of data acquisition to the IRB. All human subjects research must be approved before data collection begins. Class of 2022 Accolades and Honors
Loyola Sciences in the news
Baltimore Sun highlighted several of Loyola University science-based programs. The Sun has quoted Megan Olsen, the chair of the department of computer science that “Data science came from a combination of statistics and computer science in business, with companies realizing they had all of this data and they need to know what to do with it,” and “It’s the gathering and analyzing of data to answer some type of problem or question.”
Startup Garage: Electronics Program
Dr. Suzanne Keilson is working with Dent Education (denteducation.org) on a new 'track' curriculum for their summer programs called, 'startup garage: electronics'. The track will likely take place at the Loyola-Notre Dame library and innovation spaces and is also a partner with Loyola's Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship.
